Reed Avenue Rail Corridor: Crossing Closures Information Available

A new “Crossing Closures” section has been added to the Reed Avenue Rail Corridor project page to provide additional context on where closures will occur and why they are required. While changes to access are not ideal, they are a necessary part of advancing the project and creating a safer, more connected corridor over time.

The closures are being determined by BNSF Railway, the controlling jurisdiction for the corridor, and are based on traffic modeling, future growth projections, and anticipated redevelopment impacts.

As part of ongoing coordination, the City has received verbal support for a proposed 8-foot pedestrian connector to help maintain access through the area. While this concept has not been formally finalized, it reflects the current approach being explored to preserve connectivity within the corridor.

Downtown Planters Return in Mid-May

In preparation for the 2026 planter season, DDA staff visited Air-O-Fresh in Carpenter, WY, the selected vendor for the downtown planter program.

Air-O-Fresh also supported last year’s planter season, which received strong community feedback. With planting season approaching, coordination for the upcoming season is underway. This year, the planters will feature vibrant red, white, and blue blooms, bringing seasonal color, charm, and a welcoming atmosphere to downtown throughout the summer.

Planting is scheduled for May 15, weather permitting and following the final frost. To ensure healthy growth, please do not add additional flowers, as the planters are designed to allow space for the arrangements to fill out.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the DDA.

March 20 Work Session with City Council

DDA staff presented an overview of the DDA’s history, current work, recent progress, and future direction in a work session with Cheyenne City Council on March 20. The discussion offered helpful context on the organization’s role and ongoing efforts, including sidewalk repairs, and enhanced streetscape and greenscape updates that help make downtown more welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable. The DDA is also focused on the completion of a business toolkit, and continuation of the DDA’s grant programs and website and communication strategy updates.

Supporting Downtown Through Property Improvement Grants

The DDA recently awarded several grants to support improvements across Downtown Cheyenne, including both Capital Improvement Grants (CIG) and a Facade Improvement Program (FIP) award.

A FIP grant for the Atlas Theatre, approved on March 19, 2026, will fund the replacement of 30 historic windowpanes damaged during the August 2025 hail storm, helping restore one of downtown’s recognizable landmarks ahead of the busy summer season.

Through the CIG program, $50,000 was awarded to HealthWorks to support replacement of the sidewalk, drive approaches, and ADA ramps, contributing to safer and more accessible streets. A CIG was also awarded to Open Door Studio and Gallery to replace a damaged awning, introducing updated color and branding that adds to the character of the streetscape.

Together, these programs support improvements to building façades and public-facing elements that strengthen the appearance, accessibility, and long-term vitality of downtown, helping create a more well-maintained and visually cohesive environment for property and business owners, residents, and visitors.
