Is the streetcar really happening?
|
|
|
|
Yes! The streetcar is really happening!
After decades of conversations, years and years of studies, research, community plans, initiatives, site visits and more, it’s finally happening. (You can read more about the journey to a streetcar on our website.)
In the last six months, we’ve met more than 2,000 people in our community at events and presentations. The vast majority of people we’ve talked to are excited about the project and are looking forward to riding the streetcar through downtown and midtown.
The second most common question we get is if the streetcar is really going to be free to ride. And again, the answer is an enthusiastic yes! It really will be free to ride, making the entire urban core of our community more accessible than ever before.

| Who's on board? Clarice Dombeck from Spark talks density and safety.
Density creates safety. When more people are around, they create a safer environment for people to be out and about. Clarice Dombeck, urban development coordinator at Spark, believes the streetcar will create density, safety and a vibrant urban core that she looks forward to experiencing. Hear from her and others on our website, and if you’d like to share your perspective, contact us at omahastreetcar@publicinput.com.

Board meeting brief
July’s board meeting was short, as no votes were a part of the agenda. The design teams are busy detailing out plans, preparing for utility work and getting ready for vehicle proposals. Next month, the 2024 budget will be presented.

Answers to your questions
The streetcar project is complex, and we know the community has questions. We continue to update the FAQ section on our website when we receive questions. We’ve received dozens of comments through our website so far, and we invite you to submit more questions. Here is a common question:
What is the Omaha Streetcar Authority’s role?
The physical components of the streetcar (tracks, vehicles, maintenance facility, etc.) will be owned by the City of Omaha. It will be operated by the Omaha Streetcar Authority, a public entity created through an interlocal agreement between the City of Omaha and Metro Transit. Later this year, the Omaha Streetcar Authority will begin to hire its permanent director and staff.
