Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center Phase 2 Improvements Project Update

 

Please see the information below for the latest updates on progress, photos, and announcements:

  • Installation of the site retaining wall at the MACC's new outdoor plaza, Zocalo, continues.
  • Brick installation is ongoing at the south addition and will be followed by the north addition.
  • Waterproofing and flashing at the outdoor terrace is in progress.
  • Auditorium re-roof begins this month after the south and north addition roof details are constructed.
  • Interior framework for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire systems is proceeding.
  • Interior insulation and drywall are being installed as each building system passes inspection. 
  • Doors, windows, and elevator have all been ordered. Expected delivery is in January.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • City Council has approved artists Katherine Telley and Ruben Esquivel to design and fabricate artwork for the ESB MACC Phase 2, Art in Public Places (AIPP) Project. A kick-off meeting has been scheduled for later this month. More announcements regarding the planned community engagement for this project can be found at the AIPP website here.
  • Concrete pours and steel deliveries will continue. Work hours will adhere to the City’s noise ordinance. Ordinance information can be found here.
  • The Confluence, a separate public/private partnership project, has increased activities at the ESB MACC. The parking lot is the construction access point for the east side of the creek delta. Temporary trail detours and additional project information can be found here.
  • Partial and temporary closures of Rainey Street are planned as cranes are dismantled for various private developments in the Rainey District. Detailed and updated information can be found here.
  • The roundabout and driveways of the MACC continue to experience elevated traffic and congestion due to the volume of work in the area by developers. Please exercise caution while in this district.

SCHEDULED MILESTONES

  • Construction began – August 28, 2023
  • Anticipated completion of all major construction activity – Summer 2025
  • Anticipated grand opening – Fall 2025

 

Please note that as with any construction project, schedules are projected as accurately as possible, and all dates are subject to change due to the nature of construction and weather.
