Hard work pays off!

I think this is a saying we have all heard at some point in our lives, but you don't always immediately see the benefits of that hard work. What you do, however, is trust in the process, stay patient, believe in the work and then it all comes together. I think this is a perfect description of San Antonio Ready to Work.

Today, this program continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people across our community. Nearly 6,000 participants have secured approved jobs, achieving an average salary increase of more than $33,500. These outcomes reflect the hard work of our participants and the commitment of our partners and employers who believe in creating real opportunities for San Antonians.

Our progress is also being recognized on a national stage. Ready to Work was recently honored with three Gold Awards from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). This recognition confirms that the work happening here is resonating far beyond our city. As one judge noted, “This is how every region and community SHOULD be approaching workforce development in the times that we are in.” We are proud to set an example of what’s possible when a community invests in its people.

As we enter the City’s budget season, many households are facing rising costs from property taxes and utilities to gas and groceries. Ready to Work remains focused on creating pathways to careers that allow families to thrive. When individuals secure higher‑wage employment, they can better support their loved ones, afford their rent or mortgage, and build long‑term stability. That is the heart of this program.

I’m grateful for everyone who believes in Ready to Work and for those who work tirelessly to support our neighbors. Your dedication continues to fuel our shared success.

As you read through this newsletter, I encourage you to explore the inspiring stories and the remarkable progress being made. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient San Antonio.

Participant Spotlight

25-year-old single mother of three, Marilyn, had a clear goal of building a stable future through a career in nursing. Although her family stood firmly behind her, she faced serious financial strain. The demands of nursing coursework required her full attention, leaving her unemployed and relying solely on savings and family support to get by.

Like many non-traditional students, her path wasn’t easy. During the Spring 2025 semester, Marilyn encountered an academic setback and needed to retake several courses. Instead of discouragement, this moment became a turning point. With intensive case management and targeted intervention strategies, she worked her Ready to Work Prime Partner Project QUEST that helped provide the structure she needed to stay on track.

Her career coach, Desiree, offered consistent encouragement and connected her with crucial financial supports, including mortgage and utility assistance. She also received specialized guidance from QUEST social worker Shelby. Without these wraparound services, staying in school may not have been possible.

Thanks to her determination and her support system both inside and outside of her family, Marilyn completed her training in May 2026 and earned her registered nurse licensure the following month. Today, she is employed full-time with benefits at Clarity Child Guidance Center, achieving lasting economic stability for her family.

Marilyn’s story reflects the mission of Ready to Work by empowering residents to transform their futures through education, support, and opportunity.

Providing Options for Participants

One of the great things about RTW is that it offers a variety of training and education programs. Coaches will work with the participant to find the training/education path that is right for the participant based on his/her interests, skills, and goals. Some programs can increase a participants earning potential in a matter of weeks while some take a little longer. Here's a look at the breakdown of the 17,000+ participants currently enrolled in RTW.

International Economic Development Awards

San Antonio Ready to Work (RTW) has received multiple 2026 Excellence in Economic Development  Awards from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The gold level awards were handed out for the organization’s work in the Public-Private Partnership, Talent Development & Retention, and Economic Equity & Inclusion categories for the greater than 500,000 population group.

"The City of San Antonio is leading the field of excellence in economic development with the San Antonio Ready to Work program. This award shines a spotlight on San Antonio’s commitment to its community and showcases the significant impact of economic development,” Nathan Ohle, IEDC President and CEO said.

Each year, IEDC honors economic development organizations, government entities, initiatives, and programs that consistently demonstrate excellence in the field. The honorees lead transformational projects that revitalize communities and advance the practice of economic development.

“This is an award that belongs to our entire City,” City of San Antonio Workforce Development Office Executive Director Mike Ramsey said. “It’s great that this program is being recognized by the IEDC, but it’s even more satisfying knowing that together we have helped thousands of people gain the training and education they need to land better paying in-demand jobs. The impact this initiative is having on those that need it most is a testament to the voters who approved the program and decided to help their neighbors.”

Today, 5,910 participants have been placed in approved jobs. The average increase in salary for a participant is more than $33,500 (from approximately $11,000 to almost $45,000), and participants are also able to utilize support avenues of tuition assistance, guidance from training providers and wraparound services.

JobFest at the Frost Bank Center proved to be a tremendous success, bringing together jobseekers, employers, and community partners for a day dedicated to opportunity and connection. Hosted by San Antonio Ready to Work, Texas Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, Spurs Sports & Entertainment, and VIA, the event offered attendees direct access to employers ready to hire, career resources, and on‑site support to help them take meaningful steps toward strong, sustainable careers.

More than 2,000 people participated in JobFest, filling the arena walkways with energy and optimism. Employers from across the city shared immediate openings in high‑demand fields, while career coaches and partner organizations helped guide participants toward training programs, certifications, and career pathways that align with their goals.
