City of Charlotte Adopts Fiscal Year 2026 Budget
Charlotte City Council has unanimously approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Budget. It maintains the lowest tax rate among major North Carolina cities without raising property taxes. Highlights include establishing the Office of Youth Opportunities, investing $2.5M in sustainable infrastructure and electric vehicles, allocating $1.8M for affordable housing, and expanding the Education to Employment (E2E) program.

🎞️ Connecting in Spanish: Community Forum Links Residents to Resources and Services

A Spanish-language community forum was held in May at the Latin American Coalition featuring the City of Charlotte, CMPD, the Mecklenburg County Sherriff's Office, and Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, where attendees learned about local resources and asked questions to law enforcement and legal experts - all in Spanish.
This event was organized by CharLatinos, an employee resource network (ERN) within the City of Charlotte. CharMeck 311 was there to connect Spanish-speaking residents with city services and resources.

Hoover Townes Breaks Ground: 39 Affordable Townhomes Coming to West Sugar Creek
Charlotte broke ground on Hoover Townes, a new affordable housing community bringing 39 townhomes to the former Economy Inn site near Sugar Creek Road and I-85. This development, led by Prosperity Alliance and True Homes, provides attainable homeownership options for first-time buyers, with up to $80,000 in down-payment assistance available through House Charlotte Plus.

Bishop Madison Homes Breaks Ground: 9 Affordable Houses Rising Near Rosa Parks Transit Center
A new housing development, Bishop Madison Homes, broke ground in west Charlotte. Led by Urban Trends Collective, the community will offer nine single-family homes near the Rosa Parks Transit Center, targeting buyers earning 80% or less of area median income (AMI).
The development is supported by the City of Charlotte's Housing Trust Fund. Qualified buyers will receive down payment assistance through the House Charlotte program.

Katie Blessing Youth Behavioral Health Center: Progress Update
Charlotte City Council approved $2.5 million to help launch the Katie Blessing Center in East Charlotte to provide mental and behavioral health services to children across the region. Since August 2024, the project has made big strides toward a 2026 opening.
Phase 1 will offer 48 inpatient beds, telehealth, recreation spaces, an outdoor courtyard, and a Behavioral Health Urgent Care.
Phase 2 - a three-story addition - will follow in 2027.

Large commercial vehicles (rollbacks, semi-trucks, etc.) are not allowed on residentially zoned property. A violation of this ordinance could result in escalating fines up to $500/day.
