City offices closed Monday, Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. The holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born Jan. 15, 1929, King was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. An icon in the history of the United States, his life, activism, influence and legacy of peace and equal rights for all people is renowned and celebrated around the world. City offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day.

Youth poster exhibition – submissions open now

The City of Menlo Park encourages youth creativity and expression. Elementary, middle and high school students who live or attend school in Menlo Park are invited to submit their original poster art for display in the Black Liberation Month Youth Poster Exhibition. The exhibition theme is “Black Culture in the Arts," inspired by African, Caribbean and Black American lived experiences. Posters can be submitted by individual students or as a classroom group poster. Submissions are accepted now through Feb. 4. Visit the website for exhibition rules and a submission form.

Seasonal athletic field rentals - now accepting applications

The City of Menlo Park is accepting applications for Designated Field User Groups for the February-August season. The Designated Field User Group application is for organized sports groups that engage in seasonal athletic field use, such as for recurring practices, games and tournaments. Designated Field User Groups may reserve City of Menlo Park athletic fields for seasonal use during these months, subject to field availability, applicant eligibility and other requirements. Organized sports teams and leagues that primarily serve Menlo Park residents are encouraged to apply by the Jan. 18 deadline. See our fields webpage for details.

One-time athletic field rentals

City of Menlo Park athletic fields are available throughout the year for one-time reservations and community events, subject to schedule availability and rental requirements. The one-time reservations do not require a designated field user group application. Applications for one-time reservations are accepted at any time.

Adult basketball league – signups now open

The City of Menlo Park’s popular adult basketball league is now accepting signups through Jan. 15. All skill levels are welcome, with a variety of divisions to accommodate players of all abilities.
A Division: Highest level of competition - Monday nights 7:15 p.m.
B Division: Intermediate level competition - Wednesday nights 7:15 p.m.
40+ Division: Competitive league for those in their prime - Friday nights 7:15 p.m.
Games are held weekly starting Jan. 22 through Apr. 22 in the Arrillaga Family Gymnasium. Each team plays 10 regular season games and the top teams move on to a single elimination playoff tournament. A free agent pool is available for players who are looking to join up with a team. Space is limited––sign up your team today

Music with Los Panaderos

Hear traditional Mexican folk music, including Son Jarocho, from the state of Veracruz; Son Huasteco from the states of Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, and Veracruz; and Son Mariachero from the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Join local author Megan E. McDonald for a writer’s workshop. Meet Author Naomi Hirahara - Mystery Readers Group

Join our Mystery Readers Group online to meet Edgar Award-winning author Naomi Hirahara, writer of multiple mystery series, short stories and nonfiction. Her first historical mystery, Clark and Division, follows a Japanese American family’s move to Chicago in 1944 after being released from a California wartime detention center. Meet Naomi on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. via Zoom.
