Hello D6,
This week was about Fiesta and looking ahead to the FY2025 City budget.
|
|
|
|
These are two things that happen every year around the same time.
An unofficial kick-off to the budget talks was this week’s State of the City address, delivered by Mayor Ron Niremberg in an event sponsored by the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
The large turnout is a testament to the robust state of our city. The Mayor shared updates and the importance of major initiatives that invest in our residents, our families, and our community.
I am so proud of my hometown, the dynamic state of our city, and the collective commitment to be a world class city.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Budget talks begin next week.
On Thursday the Council will meet in a Goal Setting Session that will set a guide and general objectives for the FY 2025 Budget process that will take us through summer and into the Fall.
The final vote on the FY2025 budget will come in September and there will be ample time for you to let us know of your ideas and concerns. Every year we say that the City budget is the blueprint for getting things done. I’m looking forward to finding ways to take our success to the next level, and finding workable solutions to the areas that have challenges.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
This was also the unofficial kick-start to Fiesta. All of the Fiesta Royalty and organizers came to City Hall where the Council welcomed them and thanked them for their volunteer efforts.
The official Fiesta Kick-Off is Thursday, April 18 at 4pm at the Alamodome. That same afternoon is the opening of the Fiesta Carnaval.
All that’s left to say is Viva Fiesta!

On Tuesday we celebrated the After School All Stars, a community organization that is dedicated to helping students graduate from highschool ready for college. I was honored to deliver an official welcome to the event. The After School All Stars supports after school programs across the nation, and in San Antonio the program has grown from one school in 2003 to 41 schools today.
They serve more than 2000 children, filling a gap in after school care, when many families need support the most. And they provide learning in areas that are vital to a child’s development.

San Antonio is fortunate to be the home of CRIT - Children’s Rehabilitation Institute TeletonUSA, serving children with neurological, muscular, and skeletal disabilities through a state-of-the-art rehabilitation program.
Thank you to CRIT Ambassadors, Jeff Goldblatt and Howie Nestel for your warm hospitality this week as we learned about the important work of CRIT and the children and families who benefit from your services.

It was great to be back at my alma mater, Taft High School to speak at the Spanish National Honor Society induction ceremony.
It’s important for us to value the importance of a second language in our global economy.
I congratulate the students who were inducted in the Spanish Honor Society.
Let us all celebrate our Latino culture and language is an international part of our community.

And there is news of great things coming to D6!
Stay tuned for the Grand Opening of the new D6 Constituent Office!
Here is a sneak peek of the work underway. We look forward to our grand opening in the coming weeks as we welcome our constituents to the new community space.

ACS Pet Of The Week
Ready to add a little "paw-sitivity" to your life? My name is Archie, and I'm here to fetch your attention!
I've had quite the journey so far. Earlier this year, I was surrendered to ACS, and thankfully, the A family swooped in to foster me temporarily. They've been absolutely pawsome! While I adore the A family, I know that my furever family is out there!
I’m said to get along with everyone— dogs, cats, and kids! I absolutely LOVE toys, treats, cuddles, long walks (or runs!), and of course, belly rubs. My foster family says I'm highly trainable and have all the basic behaviors down pat, and then some!

The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114 requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.
This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.
We ask that you discuss this new state law with your child(ren).

Always dispose of pesticides properly
Pesticides and herbicides can be a convenient way to protect plants from pests and weeds. But when used or discarded incorrectly, these chemicals pose great risks not only to our ecosystem and wildlife, but also to our water, soil, air and human health.
The best way to avoid the perils of pesticides and herbicides is to stop using them altogether. But if you must use them:
- Always carefully read the product label and follow the disposal instructions exactly.
- Only purchase what you need and use it until it’s gone to avoid leftovers.
- Never discard these items in your trash bin for regular collection.
- Don’t ever pour them down sink drains, toilets or storm drains.
Pesticides and herbicides must be disposed properly at a household hazardous waste site. For a schedule of monthly drop-off events, visit sa.gov/swmd.

Animal Care Services joins Daisy Cares to feed hungry pets in San Antonio
Pet food donations sought as holidays near and needs increase
The San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) team is joining Daisy Cares, a local non-profit, to host a holiday pet food drive that will help both organizations support pet parents in need by filling their pet pantries.
Bags of dog and puppy food are especially needed in addition to other new or gently used pet items. All donations will be divided between the Daisy Cares pet food pantry and the SAACS Community Animal Support and Assistance (CASA) program, which uses a case management approach to assist pet parents in need with food, humane care support, and veterinary resources.
Residents can bring pet food donations through the end of November to Animal Care Services during regular business hours. SAACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 and is open on weekdays from 1 - 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (except on City holidays). All donations are tax-deductible.
