Roy G. Guerrero Park Channel Stabilization
December 2024

Work on the concrete drop structures continues along the west side of the Roy G. Guerrero Park stabilization site. West Drop Structures 2 and 3 are complete, and the columns that will support the pedestrian bridge have been installed on the west side. West Drop Structure 1 is anticipated to be completed by the end of January. The three concrete drop structures being built in the channel will stabilize erosion by acting as steps that steadily guide water into the river. The new pedestrian bridge will be installed atop one of the drop structures, supported by a 44-foot-deep foundation.
Completed Tasks
- The concrete drop structures are complete on the east side.
- West Drop Structures 2 and 3 are complete.
- Pedestrian bridge columns on the west side have been installed.
Ongoing Tasks
- West Drop Structure 1 is 30% complete.
- Pedestrian bridge columns on the east side will be placed next week.
- Placement of the pedestrian bridge abutments is set for January.

Background
Ongoing and severe erosion has been occurring along an artificial drainage channel, known as Country Club West, in Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. The erosion undermined the pedestrian bridge that used to be in the park, currently threatens the ball fields, trails, and parkland, and has made the channel too unstable to support a new bridge. Areas near the Colorado River are especially vulnerable to erosion. Years of complex engineering analysis and design were needed to find a solution to the erosion threat in the park. This project is the Watershed Protection Department’s largest-ever erosion control project.
