Hello D6,

This has been an eventful week, and I have an update.

If you’re reading this early Saturday morning, make plans to come to our D6 Field Office Grand Opening Block party.

This day has been years in the making and it will be wonderful to see you there so we can celebrate together!

I had a productive meeting in Houston on Thursday, where I spoke to TxDOT officials about San Antonio’s most pressing transportation needs. TxDOT is putting together a “Connecting Texas 2050 Plan” and I’m making sure that our economic and population growth is part of all infrastructure plans for the future.

Our best future includes rail between San Antonio and Austin, and I thank the San Antonio Mobility Coalition for organizing this opportunity to provide our cities input to a statewide mobility blueprint.

The demand for housing stability services in our city remains high. City staff is reviewing and processing rental assistance applications as quickly as possible, prioritizing those facing eviction.

With this rate of applications, it is important that the City balances intake efforts along with available funding. The goal is to help tenants whose rental assistance applications are approved, and refrain from accepting more applications than there are funds to assist.

As such, the Rental Assistance Program is closing its application period to new applicants on Friday, May 24. A future application period for Rental Assistance will be communicated at a later date.  

This week’s Council Challenge Blood Drive went on as planned on Monday. What wasn’t planned was the heavy rain that day.

We need the rain, so we don’t mind that it put a damper on our blood drive.

That said, we’re working to reschedule the drive so everyone who planned to donate but couldn’t because of the rain will have a second opportunity.

We’ll let you know as soon as we have a date.

Thank you to the Misty Oaks residents who gathered at the Lopez Senior Center this week for an update on the planned Lower French Creek drainage project.

The 2022 bond project will address flooding along Heath Rd and parts of the Misty Oaks neighborhood.

Thank you as well to the Department of Public Works staff who presented the plan and answered questions.

Congratulations Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) on their ribbon cutting celebration!

I applaud the work of CASA and the generous supporters who helped to transform the campus over the last 2 years. These renovations will ensure our community has access to the services and facilities for our families and foster children.

For over 40 years CASA has been changing lives across our city and we thank the financial supporters who made this possible.

Thank you, Family Violence Prevention Services and the Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter, for your strong and lifesaving commitment to the women and families of San Antonio.

This week's Honoring Mothers Luncheon was a beautiful celebration of how the community can change the lives of women and families in San Antonio, and for that I am most grateful.

As our D6 students prepare to end the school year, I was happy to be a part of Jack C. Jordan Middle School Field Day for outdoor activities, fun games, and school spirit as we celebrate the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.

ACS Pet Of The Week

Last month, Blondie’s previous caretaker made the heart-wrenching decision to surrender her and her two precious puppies due to financial difficulties. Being without an income left Blondie's caretaker unable to provide for the small canine family, resulting in Blondie's thin appearance. While her puppies quickly found loving homes, Blondie is still searching for her forever family.

Despite her past struggles, Blondie's loving nature knows no bounds. In foster care, she's proven to be fantastic with kids and craves affection like no other. She's a true sweetheart who thrives on companionship and love.

Blondie should meet any potential fur siblings before going home. She adores playtime with tennis balls, indulging in tasty treats, leisurely walks, and of course, receiving lots of pets and cuddles.

The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114 requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.

This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.

We ask that you discuss this new state law with your child(ren).

Animal Care Services Extends Shelter Hours to Encourage Lifesaving

 San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) has expanded shelter hours to give would-be adopters, fosters, and rescue partners more opportunities to help pets in need. The municipal shelter will be open two additional hours, with adoptions and other services now available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Weekend hours remain unchanged, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The $25 special adoption rate continues through the end of July. This special rate applies to dog, cat, puppy, and kitten adoptions. 

Fosters Desperately Needed to Help Local Pets in Need

 San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) and local animal welfare partners have been flooded with pets in need, including dozens of puppies and kittens. Fosters are urgently needed to provide temporary care for pets as they become adoption ready. Foster applications are available via the following links:

Fosters will receive food and other supplies for their temporary pets including medical care and vaccinations. Interested residents should check with the program of their choice for additional resources. 

Always dispose of pesticides properly

Pesticides and herbicides can be a convenient way to protect plants from pests and weeds. But when used or discarded incorrectly, these chemicals pose great risks not only to our ecosystem and wildlife, but also to our water, soil, air and human health.

The best way to avoid the perils of pesticides and herbicides is to stop using them altogether. But if you must use them:

• Always carefully read the product label and follow the disposal instructions exactly.
• Only purchase what you need and use it until it’s gone to avoid leftovers.
• Never discard these items in your trash bin for regular collection.  
• Don’t ever pour them down sink drains, toilets or storm drains.

Pesticides and herbicides must be disposed properly at a household hazardous waste site. For a schedule of monthly drop-off events, visit sa.gov/swmd.

Animal Care Services joins Daisy Cares to feed hungry pets in San Antonio 

Pet food donations sought as holidays near and needs increase   

The San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) team is joining Daisy Cares, a local non-profit, to host a holiday pet food drive that will help both organizations support pet parents in need by filling their pet pantries.    

Bags of dog and puppy food are especially needed in addition to other new or gently used pet items. All donations will be divided between the Daisy Cares pet food pantry and the SAACS Community Animal Support and Assistance (CASA) program, which uses a case management approach to assist pet parents in need with food, humane care support, and veterinary resources.   

Residents can bring pet food donations through the end of November to Animal Care Services during regular business hours. SAACS is located at 4710 State Highway 151 and is open on weekdays from 1 - 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (except on City holidays). All donations are tax-deductible.
