Federal Grant Expands Accessible Transportation in Frederick County
Transit Services of Frederick County has received new federal funding that will strengthen Transit-plus, the County’s essential paratransit service for older adults and people with disabilities. The funding was awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s FY25 Buses and Bus Facilities Program (FTA). It will allow Transit Services to add new accessible vehicles to provide safe, dependable transportation countywide.
“Ensuring that everyone in Frederick County has access to reliable transportation is essential for a strong, connected community,” said County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. “This federal investment supports our commitment to accessibility and independence for our neighbors who rely on paratransit services. We are grateful for this support and excited to see how these new vehicles will improve mobility across the county.”
With this federal investment, Transit Services will purchase two accessible minivans and two light duty cutaway buses. These vehicles are critical to Transit-plus operations, helping people travel to medical appointments, work, grocery stores, social services, and community programs throughout Frederick County.
Transit-plus provides far more than transportation for many riders – it serves as a vital connection to the community. Riders consistently praise the service for its reliability, accessibility, and the professionalism of its staff. One resident from Adamstown expressed appreciation for the program, noting, “The drivers are good, friendly, and extremely helpful.” Such feedback highlights the trust and confidence riders have in Transit-plus and underscores its importance in supporting independence for older adults and people with disabilities.
The total project cost is $420,000. The FTA will fund 80 percent of the project and Frederick County will provide the remaining 20 percent local match.
“This funding allows us to expand Transit-plus in a meaningful way,” said Roman Steichen, Director of Transit Services of Frederick County. “With demand for paratransit growing, these new vehicles will help us strengthen reliability, and better support the people who depend on us. Our team is committed to delivering inclusive transportation options that help community members stay engaged and independent.”
Transit-plus offers county-wide, shared-ride, curb-to-curb paratransit service for eligible residents of Frederick County, and remains a cornerstone of the County’s commitment to accessible, inclusive transportation.
