City of San Diego Adopts New Trash Fee
The San Diego City Council on Monday, June 9 approved a cost-recovery trash fee. The decision will help the City improve and sustain its solid waste services. The fee applies to about 226,500 properties within the city.
With the new program, broken bins will be replaced without an extra charge. Customers can also save money by choosing smaller trash bins. After two years, the program will include weekly recycling pickups and a new curbside bulky-item pickup program.
The City Council decision reflects choices made by voters who passed Measure B in 2022. The measure allowed the City to charge a fee. It also clarified the types of homes served by the City. These include most single-family houses, as well as residential properties with four residences or less on a single lot.
The new charges will apply for service starting July 1, 2025. Funds from the trash fee will go into the City's new Solid Waste Management Fund. The money collected can only be used to cover the costs to provide solid waste management services to customers paying the new fee.
