Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements Project Update
September 2024
The City of Austin's Capital Delivery Services, sponsored by the Transportation and Public Works Department, continue on with construction of the Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements Project! This project will be providing a new wishbone-shaped bicycle and pedestrian bridge that will connect the Ann & Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, as well as a new underpass for pedestrians and bikers underneath South Pleasant Valley Road.
Completed Tasks:
- Sealing of the former tunnel under South Pleasant Valley Road. The tunnel was backfilled with controlled low-strength material (CLSM) concrete and sealed with concrete cap.
- Removal of pedestrian bridge across Holly Shores Peninsula.
- Construction and excavation of the east side of the new underpass under South Pleasant Valley Road.
- Construction of abutments along Canterbury Park, Longhorn Shores and the unnamed peninsula. Abutments are the support structures that the wishbone-shaped bridge will rest on.

Ongoing Tasks:
- Continued construction of drill shafts along Canterbury Park, Longhorn Shores and the unnamed peninsula. Drill shafts are deep foundation solutions that will support the components of the wishbone-shaped bridge.
- Construction of the footing for the east side of the underpass under South Pleasant Valley Road. Pre-cast arches for the underpass will arrive in October. The arches for the underpass are 16-feet tall and 30-feet wide at their base.
- Installation of cast-in-place concrete columns into drill shaft rebar. These cast-in-place concrete columns are verticle support columns that help hold up the bridge.
