Youth poster exhibition – submissions due by Feb. 4

The City of Menlo Park encourages youth creativity and expression. Elementary, middle and high school students who live or attend school in Menlo Park are invited to submit their original poster art for display in the Black Liberation Month Youth Poster Exhibition. The exhibition theme is “Black Culture in the Arts," inspired by African, Caribbean and Black American lived experiences. Posters can be submitted by individual students or as a classroom group poster. Submissions are accepted now through Feb. 4. Visit the website for exhibition rules and a submission form.

Get involved! Apply to Library Commission vacancies by Jan. 26

The City of Menlo Park is seeking applicants to fill advisory body vacancies. There are two vacancies on the Library Commission – one vacancy for a term expiring April 30, 2024, and another vacancy for term expiring April 30, 2025. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and reside in City of Menlo Park. The recruitment closes Friday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m. Learn more and apply online.

Library Teen Advisory Group seeks new members

The Library Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is accepting applications for new members. Join other teens in grades seven-12 in earning volunteer hours at the library with a variety of different activities. TAG meets twice a month to create colorful book displays, plan fun events, help with library projects and more. This is a rewarding extracurricular activity for middle and high schoolers. The next Parks and Recreation Commission meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. This is a hybrid meeting and participants can join via Zoom or in person at the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, 700 Alma St. View the meeting agenda.

Music with Los Panaderos

Hear traditional Mexican folk music, including Son Jarocho, from the state of Veracruz; Son Huasteco from the states of Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, and Veracruz; and Son Mariachero from the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Lunar New Year calligraphy class

Join us for an introduction to the art of Chinese calligraphy to celebrate the Lunar New Year (the Year of the Dragon). Learn traditional Chinese calligraphy basics including holding a brush and writing basic strokes and New Year sayings. For ages six-adult. This free community event received funding support from Friends of Menlo Park Library. We hope to see you Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St.
