Construction wraps up on the William Cannon Drive Bridge West Approach Stabilization project
Capital Delivery Services (CDS) thanks you for your patience and understanding during this important safety project. We would like to hear more about your experience during construction by participating in a short survey. For your convenience and to help with your feedback, we've provided a summary of activities below.
Bridge Stabilization
Overnight on August 25, 2022, a small portion of an eastbound travel lane on West William Cannon Drive caved in. The street damage occurred on the western approach to the bridge. The bridge deck was not impacted by the cave-in. The collapse was caused by sediment movement under the roadway asphalt which happened after the heavy rains earlier that week.
The City of Austin stabilized the Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls on the west approach, installing over 600 soil nails into the bridge’s retaining walls before adding a new layer of concrete to each wall. The sediment beneath the roadway has been stabilized to ensure safe travel conditions for decades to come.
Community Engagement
The City sent regular and timely email updates, conducted periodic neighborhood walks, and met with residents to gather feedback throughout construction work.
CDS hosted an open house meeting during Phase 1 that allowed community members to voice concerns. The virtual open house website was expanded into a resource hub that answered questions and provided project update details.
A Phase 2 virtual meeting was held in March 2024 and served as an opportunity for residents to meet the project team, hear about next steps, and give their feedback on Phase 1. Additionally, CDS continued responding to residents’ emails and periodically met with residents to hear their concerns.
