What is an advisory board?

The purpose of advisory boards is to:

  • Provide information and/or recommendations to Council to help inform their decisions
  • Offer additional opportunities for discussion of public issues
  • Increase resident engagement in issues that affect them

Advisory board members are appointed by the Town Council and may have expertise on the board’s specific topic area.

What can I expect during advisory board meetings?

The Historic District Commission (HDC) and the Planning Commission are advisory boards, and they will review the proposed text amendments prior to the Town Council Public Hearing.

Staff will present an informational overview of the text amendment project to each board at their upcoming meetings. The boards may then provide recommendations and comments to the Town Council.

We welcome the public to attend these meetings.  Advisory board chairs choose whether or not they will take public comment.

Where can I see the draft ordinance?

Staff will include the draft ordinance in the Planning Commission packet, to be published the week of May 8th.  We will also post a copy of the draft ordinance at that time on the project website: https://www.townofchapelhill.org/government/departments-services/planning/plans-and-ordinances/current-initiatives/housing-access-text-amendments

How can I provide input?

We welcome and encourage your input. There are three ways that you can provide input for this proposal:
