| We want to make you aware that the Historic Tunstall House, located adjacent to the Senior Center, will soon be undergoing renovations as the Town prepares it for future use. This project will impact the Apex Senior Center parking lot and is projected to start in mid August.
- The Apex Senior Center parking lot will be closed for the duration of the project.
- The handicapped parking spaces in front of the Senior Center, the Go Apex bus stop, and the covered drop-off will not be impacted.
- The anticipated duration of this project is 12 months.
Please be advised that you will need to allow for more time to arrive and park for classes starting in August through the duration of the project. Fall program registration starts on Monday, July 21. We ask that you take this into consideration as you plan to register for Fall programs and beyond.
Here are some important things to note regarding this renovation project, and some things we are doing proactively to help ease this transition:
- Several Fall sessions have been intentionally scheduled to avoid Early Voting dates and expected construction dates.
- An automated handicap access door is going to be installed at the back door of the Senior Center to make every entrance accessible, especially for those entering from the Town Hall Parking lot.
- Staff and visitors of Town Hall and the Community Center will be encouraged to avoid parking in the arc lot.
- The new Mason Street building has opened across the road, and many vehicles that previously parked at Town Hall are no longer taking up spaces in that lot, which frees up more spaces for visitors.
- The Tunstall House renovation will include adding a turnaround to the Senior Center lot.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please email us at seniorcenter@apexnc.org. Thank you for your understanding during this time, we hope to see you for a visit soon!
Parking Map Guide (effective once the renovation project begins)

Parking Map Notes: The red space indicates a closed parking lot. The yellow spaces are available parking spots, and the blue spaces indicate handicap parking spots.

Interested to know more about the Historic Tunstall House?
The Thompson-Utley-Fletcher-Tunstall House is one of the oldest existing houses in Apex today. This house was built around 1872. This house was owned by several families before it was eventually put up for auction and purchased by Wake County for $2000 in 1937. Wake County owned the property for five years and in 1943, it was sold to Verne Tunstall and his wife Mary Lee for $250. The Tunstalls farmed the property and added a fishing pond that was once used to supply water to the town during a severe drought. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel destroyed both of the home’s chimneys and Mary Lee and her son William survived the storm by hiding under an overturned sofa.
Verne Tunstall is the namesake of Apex’s Tunstall Street, and he was one of the Town’s early commissioners and a charter member of the fire department. Mary Lee became the sole owner of the house after her husband’s death in 1983. The Town of Apex acquired the house in 1997. Though the Town brought the house and property, Mary Lee retained a life estate in the house and one acre. Mary Lee, a charter member of the Apex Historical Society, was pleased that the Town wanted to purchase the property telling "Neighbors", a Southwestern Wake County newspaper, “When representatives of the town approached us about selling the property, we like the idea of having the house preserved. Saving history is really important to us.” In partial fulfillment of its commitment to preserve the house, the Mayor of Apex (Keith Weatherly), on January 14, 2003, sent a letter on behalf of the Town Commissioners to the Wake County Historic Preservation Commission indicating their desire to attain Landmark status for this important structure.
