Introducing the Preferred Alternative Future for the Triangle's Transportation System!

If you’re interested in transportation in our region, including the transit (bus and rail), bicycle, pedestrian, and highway networks, then we invite you to learn more about Destination 2055, and the process that has led to the identification of a "Preferred Alternative".

In 2024, many of you provided feedback on the goals and objectives for Destination 2055 (also known as the 2055 Triangle Region Metropolitan Transportation Plan - MTP). Then, this past spring, you shared input on the most important aspects to carry forward from three (3) Alternative Future Scenarios. After considering results from community input among other things, the CAMPO and TWTPO (Executive) Boards approved moving forward with the most ambitious alternative, the "All-Together" scenario, designating it the Preferred Alternative.  The image below demonstrates how community input aligns with the All-Together (now known as the "Preferred") Alternative:

Table showing how the All-Together Alternative most aligned with community inputs. Road investments are included but are at a middle level compared to other scenarios. Transit and bike/ped are at the highest level while density focuses more on limiting sprawl and preserving land.

The Preferred Alternative will now be scrutinized further, through additional modeling and data analysis, including the primary function of this phase: FISCAL FEASIBILITY. Read more on the project website and share any thoughts you may have about this alternative in particular, or about ways revenues could be increased to meet future transportation needs.

Preferred Alternative for Destination 2055

A public comment/feedback period for Destination 2055's Preferred Alternative is open until August 10th. Comments may be submitted through the feedback form, by email to Destination2055preferred@publicinput.com, or voicemail to 855-925-2801 using code 11736.

What is Destination 2055?

Destination 2055 is the long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) for the Triangle region. The plan is being developed cooperatively by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and the Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization (TWTPO, formerly known as the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization or DCHC MPO). This plan will identify roadway, transit, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian projects, programs, and policies that are recommended for the region's transportation network over the next 30 years.

The Destination 2055 development process consists of four phases: 1) Goals & Objectives 2) Alternatives Analysis 3) Preferred Alternative (we are here!) 4) Draft Plan
