City Council appointed Robert Harrington, president of the North Carolina Bar Association, as interim mayor following Mayor Vi Lyles's resignation. He'll serve the remainder of the term, through December 2027 (Read the interim mayor announcement). Council also adopted the FY2027 budget, a $4.49 billion citywide plan that raises property tax by 1.89 cents for public safety, lifts minimum city employee pay to $25 an hour, and continues funding for neighborhood grants and mobility projects (View FY2027 budget highlights).

Youth Opportunities: QuikTrip Puts $25K Toward Summer Success
|
|
HNS's Office of Youth Opportunities (OYO) partnered with QuikTrip Corporation to put $25,000 in gift cards into the hands of youth in the city's summer programs, helping cover food and transportation costs as they commute to jobs and career experiences. OYO and QuikTrip celebrated at a Central Avenue QT, then hosted a dedicated event for Mayor's Youth Employment Program (MYEP) interns living in District 5.
"We are incredibly grateful to QuikTrip Corporation for their generosity and commitment to providing for Charlotte’s youth,” said Housing & Neighborhood Services Department director, Raquishela Stewart. "This office was created to connect our young people to growth opportunities and help them build a brighter future."
OYO includes MYEP, Envision Academy, and other career readiness initiatives.

HOMES Program: Up to $650 Toward Your Property Tax Bill
Mecklenburg County’s HOMES Program (Helping Out Mecklenburg’s homeowners with Economic Support) could knock up to $650 off your county property tax bill this year through a one-page application. Homeowners in the Town of Davidson may qualify for up to $554 more. The deadline to apply is Nov. 20, 2026. Apply for the HOMES property tax assistance program.

Faith in Housing Cohort Celebrates Graduation
|
|
The inaugural Faith in Housing Charlotte Educational Cohort recently celebrated its graduation. The cohort brought together 12 faith-based organizations from across Charlotte to explore how underutilized land can support affordable housing and community-serving development.
Collectively, the cohort owns over 88 acres of land across Charlotte, with proposed development sites ranging from .6 to 40 acres. Many of the envisioned projects would serve residents with the greatest housing needs, including low-income families, seniors, and people experiencing homelessness. Proposed uses include family-sized rental homes, senior housing and mixed-use developments with community amenities.
