Taney Avenue Senior Center Receives $1 Million in Federal Funding to Expand Services and Add Affordable Senior Housing

FREDERICK, Md. – Frederick County has been awarded $1,000,000 in federal funds secured by U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks and Congresswoman April McClain Delaney to redevelop the senior center and add affordable housing units at 1440 Taney Avenue in Frederick. This project aligns with County Executive Jessica Fitzwater’s vision to develop properties that provide both public services and affordable housing for people in the community.

“By co-locating affordable senior housing with a renovated senior center, we can create a space where older residents can access essential services, social activities, and safe, comfortable living all under one roof,” said County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. “This approach strengthens community connections and ensures seniors can age in place with dignity and support.”

The federally awarded funding will help provide a modernized senior center that will be available to seniors throughout the community, while providing affordable senior housing within the same building. This will provide more robust support for the county’s seniors – allowing them to stay at home safely for as long as possible.

The funding comes from the Fiscal Year 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending program, as part of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Government Spending bill recently passed by Congress and signed into law by the President.

“Pairing affordable housing with access to senior services is a win-win for our older residents. That’s why we worked to secure this $1 million in federal funding to update the Taney Avenue Senior Center and create new, adjacent affordable housing options for local residents. This investment will help ensure more Frederick County seniors can live independently, with the support they need, in the community they call home,” said Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"I'm a part of the sandwich generation, so I understand deeply the challenges – and privilege – of caring for aging parents and raising my daughter. I also understand that the seniors in our communities deserve to age and retire with dignity. Securing $1 million for affordable senior housing and to redevelop Taney Avenue Senior Center was absolutely essential to me, and I am so looking forward to seeing the new, modernized senior center and affordable housing that will allow seniors in Frederick County to age safely and peacefully," said Senator Alsobrooks.

"Frederick County’s seniors deserve safe, affordable housing, and I’m proud to bring home critically needed funding to make that a reality. This major investment reflects my legislative agenda in Congress to bring costs down and drive opportunities up for Maryland's working families. Frederick is a place that takes care of all its neighbors, and this project ensures our seniors can live comfortably while enjoying everything our county has to offer. I look forward to visiting the center and seeing the difference it will make firsthand," said Representative April McClain Delaney.

Support for this project also comes from community partners invested in addressing accessible housing capacity and co-locating services with affordable housing in Frederick. Frederick County expects to issue a Request for Proposals for a public-private partnership in FY26. The tentative completion timeline is between 2028 and 2030.
