NEWS

District 2 Office Announces Preparation for New Mural on N. New Braunfels Bridge

In a video shared on social media sites X and Instagram, Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez announced initial steps to replace the faded mural on the N. New Braunfels Bridge in District 2. Twenty-seven years ago, an art contest was held to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which resulted in the artwork that hangs above the bridge today. Over time, the artwork has faded and residents have requested updated artwork.

“Every year, we receive dozens of calls from residents asking how and when the murals that have welcomed hundreds of thousands of people into the Eastside can be restored or replaced,” remarked the Councilman. “After all this time, we are so excited to announce this effort to bring new life to the N. New Braunfels bridge and provide an opportunity for new artists. Together, we will honor the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a fresh perspective, celebrate civil rights history, and add to the legacy of District 2.”

On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, there will be a temporary street closure on N. New Braunfels Ave. between Burleson St. and Osburn St. The street closure will allow a contractor for the Public Works Department to remove the mural. The closure should reopen that afternoon.

Details of the contest are expected to be revealed mid-to-late March to early April.
