Austin is working to improve safety, connectivity and access for everyone on Neils Thompson Drive and Longhorn Boulevard in North Austin. These streets are part of the citywide urban trail and bikeway system and also serve access to a large industrial park frequented by large trucks along with regular employee and customer trips.
PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS
As a result of feedback gathered from area stakeholders, the City is modifying the trail design to provide for trail comfort while accommodating frequent large truck movements to, from and within the industrial park. The updated trail profile will maintain the urban trail while creating wider travel lanes, larger driveway entrances and on-street parking pockets. The new trail will take the form of a shared use path with a low-profile concrete barrier. Please review detailed drawings and learn more about the project at publicinput.com/sctextension.
EXISTING AND EMERGING CONNECTIONS
This project to extend the Shoal Creek Trail will connect with a shared use pathway to be constructed along Burnet Road over the next 2 years, offering connections to the “Big Loop,” a 35-mile route connecting many of Austin’s signature creek and river trails, as shown below.

NEXT STEPS
New drainage infrastructure along the eastern side of Neils Thompson Drive between Industrial Terrace and the headwaters of Shoal Creek is now complete. Construction on the trail will now progress north along Neils Thompson Drive and then onto Longhorn Boulevard. Construction is expected to take 6-8 months, pending weather or any other unexpected delays. Burnet Road corridor work is expected to begin Spring 2026 and end in early 2027.
