Del Curto Storm Drain Improvements
March 2026 Construction Update
In March, crews finished installing a storm drain on Southland Drive, which will connect to the main storm drain as part of the Del Curto Storm Drain Improvements project. Work on similar pipes on Iva Lane and Kinney Road are nearly complete as well.
Crews noticed that the creek under Kinney Road dried up when water was shut off during utility relocation work. Austin Water investigated and repaired a water main break. The creek has remained dry. Repairing the leak saves water, helps protect the environment, and reduces the risk of bigger problems in the future. Austin Watershed Protection is further investigating the creek conditions.
Reduced Traffic:
Beginning Monday, April 6, work will commence on Del Curto Road for storm drain installation. Construction will span along Del Curto from Iva Lane to Bluebonnet Lane. Flaggers will be present throughout this work to direct traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.

Water Shutoffs:
We will need to shut off water periodically to complete some of the work for this project. We will leave a notice on the front door of affected homes 48 hours in advance with two exceptions:
- We may briefly turn off water without notice to test valves and equipment ahead of a planned outage.
- There is always the possibility of a temporary, loss of water or other service if a pipe or line is broken. We’ll respond immediately to restore service if this happens. We have done extensive research ahead of time to pinpoint where all the underground utilities are. This should avoid unplanned outages.
If your residence is to be affected, please consider storing water in a pitcher or bathtub in order to have water supplies on hand during the shutoff. When services are restored, please flush your lines by running a cold-water bathtub spigot and an outside faucet for 10-15 minutes before using other faucets. This rids the system of any natural sediment buildup that may have occurred over the years. It’s helpful to rinse out faucet screens as well.

Box culvert installation at Thornton Road
Project Background:
The Del Curto SDI project will improve the storm drain system in the South Lamar area and help protect the area from flooding. The existing Del Curto storm drain system straddles South Lamar Boulevard. It consists of 9,300 feet of pipe, a section of open channel and 38 inlets. The system is not large enough to drain the amount of stormwater that it needs to. There are at least 20 buildings, yards, and streets at risk of flooding. This project includes:
- Installing new storm drain pipes or upgrading existing ones on Bluebonnet Lane, Del Curto Road, Delcrest Drive, Iva Lane, Kinney Road, Southland Drive and across properties between Kinney Road and West Bouldin Creek
- Adding curb and gutter along part of Bluebonnet Lane
- Installing a new roundabout at the Del Curto Road and Bluebonnet Lane intersection
- Building a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists on Bluebonnet Lane, between South Lamar Blvd. and Del Curto Road

- This is an active construction site. For the safety of the public, unauthorized entry is not permitted.
- Permitted construction hours are:
- 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Thornton Road worksite
- 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kinney Road to Bluebonnet Lane worksites
- Please note that as with any construction project, schedules are projected as accurately as possible, and all dates are subject to change due to the nature of construction and weather.
