County Divisions Team Up to Prevent Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

Fire Prevention Week.

The news: The Divisions of Fire and Rescue Services and Solid Waste and Recycling are helping people in Frederick County learn how to safely handle and dispose lithium-ion batteries. They are hosting special events this month to dispose of lithium-ion batteries and are offering free, appointment-based curbside pickup of lithium-ion batteries and small electronics.

Why it matters: Most lithium-ion batteries are safe when used and disposed of properly. However, they can become damaged or unstable over time, especially once the batteries are thrown away. If damaged, materials inside can cause a fire. With education and resources about how to properly dispose of these batteries, we can keep our families and neighborhoods safe.
