The City of San Diego Cost-of-Service study (trash study) is a public process to evaluate services and potential new fees for City-provided residential trash, recycling and organic waste collection services.

As part of its efforts to reach residents across all City Council Districts, San Diego's Cost-of-Service Study team is going to community events, speaking to community councils and hosting meetings. At each, team members share news of the study and listen to residents.

This week, the team will present project information to: 

• Mira Mesa Community Planning Group
• Clairemont Community Planning Group
• Pacific Beach Town Council
• Greater Golden Hill Community Planning Group

Team members share short slide presentations and respond to questions.

Over the coming weekend, the team will host tables at the following events:

• Bailando in the Barrio, Sept. 21 at Memorial Park
• Pacific Islander Festival (PIFA), Sept. 21 and 22 at Ski Beach in Mission Bay Park
• Point Loma Farmers Market, Sept. 22

Team members provide project flyers and invite residents to complete a survey.

Data supports better decisions 

The City included outreach in its Cost-of-Service Study because hearing from residents helps the City make decisions that reflect public values. Thus far, outreach activities for the Cost-of-Service Study have included:

• 44 Events
• 10 Public Open House meetings
• 3 Working Group meetings
• 1,600 Residents who have met the team in person
• 1,700 Residents who have taken surveys
• 1,700 Flyers distributed in the community

There are 22 upcoming community events and presentations. New dates are added weekly.

Round 2 Open House Events will start in November. Please watch future newsletters for an announcement, or check the website for future dates and locations.

Every other city in the county, and nearly every city in the nation, requires residents to pay fees for trash and recycling collection. The City of San Diego's trash study will compare any proposed future charges to what nearby jurisdictions are charging now.
