Celebrating our 2022 Employee of the Year
If you’ve ever reached out to the Town of Apex by phone or connected with us online, our 2022 Employee of the Year has been a key figure in helping to provide that connection!
Mike Boyd, IT Analyst with the town’s Information Technology Department, received nominations not only from his own department, but from departments across the organization. Mike has been with the town for 18 years, and is described as a dedicated and professional teammate who is always quick to respond and provide high-quality customer service to those he interacts with.
One nomination stated that Mike displays a “constant positive, warm, and cheerful spirit that makes him a joy to work with”. Others describe him as being “open to new ideas and ways to improve things for his department and town”.
Mike is known for always ensuring that critical needs are met and problems are solved promptly, sticking with a project until it's completion, even when faced with other demands or obstacles. He embodies each of the town’s PEAK Principles - Performance, Empowerment, Accountability, and Knowledge.

Seven Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes
When temps dip below freezing, it can mean trouble for your pipes! Here are seven ways to help prevent frozen or busted pipes:
- Ensure your garden hoses are disconnected from hose spigots.
- Keep the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to circulate warmer air around the pipes.
- Open one faucet to a slow drip (running water does not freeze).
- Maintain an indoor temperature of at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Consider insulating pipes located in unheated areas such as garages, basements, attics, or crawl spaces.
- Inspect your home for cracks or openings that could let in cold air and then seal those areas.
- Irrigation customers should winterize their systems by closing the main shut-off valve to the system, close the shut-off valves on the backflow preventer, open the quarter-inch test ball valve to drain the body of the backflow preventer, and insulate the assembly with insulation (do not block the relief valve vent with insulation) or simply remove the backflow preventer entirely from the system for the winter.
If you experience frozen or busted pipes, contact the Town of Apex Water Resources Department at (919) 362-8166 during normal business hours Monday - Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. After hours, weekends, and holidays, dial (919) 372-7475 to notify on-call staff of your water/sewer emergency.

Saving Trees by Removing Mistletoe
Did you know? Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that sends out root-like structures into tree branches, stealing water and nutrients from the limb it is attached to. Town staff is currently working to reduce the mistletoe infesting our larger downtown oak trees. This is a great time of year to identify and remove mistletoe, when leaves have fallen off of deciduous trees.
If you notice five or more patches of mistletoe in a tree, contact our arborist, Phillip Barnes.
