LaunchAPEX
Cohort 7 held their graduation ceremony on June 4. A total of 16 local entrepreneurs and business owners completed the 10-week course, facilitated by Wake Tech, as well as a 6-month mentorship with a community business leader. Since its beginning in 2018, LaunchAPEX has graduated over 95 participants in the business training, networking, mentoring and financial resources program.

Wake Tech Main Street Entrepreneurs Accelerator Program
On May 16, two members of LaunchAPEX Cohort 7 secured grant money after placing in Wake Tech’s Main Street Entrepreneurs Accelerator (MSEA) pitch competition. Fayal Ahemd of Chai Street and Co. was awarded $2,500 and Debi Ndindjock of Koko Body Care was awarded $10,000. The MSEA program is a training and pitch competition for students and small-business owners in Wake County, aimed at accelerating business growth. Read more…

National Small Business Week Recap
Apex Economic Development implemented multiple activities throughout the week of April 28 – May 4 in recognition of National Small Business Week. The activities that benefited local small businesses included informational sessions and networking events. For more than 60 years, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has celebrated National Small Business Week, which acknowledges the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Apex Small Business Advisory Group
On July 9, the Apex Small Business Advisory Group hosted its third quarterly group meeting of 2024. During the meeting, Apex Economic Development staff shared updates regarding tourism development, LaunchAPEX and the new Apex “Love Local” Showcase - Summer Sizzle Edition. Andrew Baker, Marketing Manager for VisitRaleigh, presented on tourism as well and the session concluded with a Q&A discussion. The next Apex Small Business Advisory Group meeting is Tuesday, September 17, at 5:30 pm, in Town Hall, Third Floor, Training Room 3 A/B.

Joanna Helms Named to
2024 Business NC Power List
Joanna Helms, Apex Economic Development Director, was recently named to the 2024 Business North Carolina “Power List.” Each year the magazine recognizes the most influential leaders across the state in various professions. Joanna started the economic development department in Apex in 2014 and currently also serves as the 2024-25 Immediate Past President of North Carolina Economic Development Association (NCEDA), which is the statewide trade association with over 950 members.

NCEDA Annual Conference
In June, Joanna Helms and Colleen Merays attended the North Carolina Economic Development Association (NCEDA) Annual Conference. Joanna Helms was recognized as the 2023-24 President of NCEDA and now serves as the 2024-25 Immediate Past President. Colleen Merays was recognized for receiving her North Carolina Certified Economic Developer (NCCED) certification.

Apex Gateway Topping Out Ceremony
A topping out ceremony was held on May 22 at Apex Gateway to celebrate significant construction milestones of the new distribution facility for Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Apex Gateway is a 1.2 million square foot master-planned industrial and life science park located at the intersection of NC-751 and US-64 in western Apex. The park will also feature four additional built-to-suit buildings, ranging in size from 135,000 to 359,000 square feet.

Moldova Delegation
The Town of Apex recently hosted a delegation of officials from the country of Moldova. The delegates were part of Open World, a ten-day program administered by the Congressional Office for International Leadership that brings emerging leaders from Eurasia to the United States to engage with professional counterparts. During their time in Apex, the guests met with Town leadership and local, regional and state leaders in economic development and planning. Topics discussed included recruitment and retention of business, target industries both locally and statewide, planning best practices, municipal organization and the challenges that come with rapid growth. The visit also included a tour of the Town of Apex, highlighted by a visit to a local industrial park to tour a speculative building.

Think Apex Day
Think Apex Day was held on April 29. Over 100 local volunteers participated across five different community service activities. Those activities included picking up trash, cleaning park signage, and creating bags for a local senior living community. Learn more about Think Apex here.
