SR 163/North Shore Blvd Intersection Improvements (OTT-163-33.85, PID 109637)
SR 163/North Shore Blvd Intersection Improvements (OTT-163-33.85, PID 109637)
The Ohio Department of Transportation held a virtual public meeting for the proposed intersection improvement at State Route 163 (SR 163), North Shore Boulevard, and Englebeck Road, located in Ottawa County, Ohio. The meeting explained the overall proposed project, discussed the alternatives that were investigated, presented the preliminary roundabout design and potential impacts, and discussed how traffic will be maintained during construction and the proposed detour route for traffic. The project is expected to require permanent and temporary right-of-way near the intersection. In order to expedite construction in fall of 2022, part of the intersection is proposed to be closed for at least 76 days with vehicular detours posted.
Between 2015 and 2017, a total of 13 crashes were reported at the intersection and the intersection was listed on the Highway Safety Improvement Program statewide list in 2013. Of the 13 crashes reported, eight (62%) were angle crashes, three (23%) were rear-end crashes and two (15%) were left turn crashes. Furthermore, six (46%) of the 13 crashes resulted in injuries. Over 75% of the 13 reported crashes at this intersection were caused by vehicles failing to yield. Approximately 62% of these "failure to yield" crashes involved vehicles from North Shore Boulevard and Englebeck Road colliding with vehicles traveling on SR-163. Existing roadway conditions, including poor intersection geometry and the angle (or skew) at which the roadways meet are issues with the intersection.
