Cornwall Road
Cornwall Road
West & East Cornwall Road (Collector) - Griffis to Washington
Cary has received input from multiple residents in the Cornwall Road neighborhoods, both east and west of Kildaire Farm Road, expressing concerns related to the volume and speed of vehicle traffic moving through the area. Staff have reviewed the context of these concerns and are committed to exploring options for improving the area for all road users.
Any input can be provided by emailing the Cary Project Manager using the link below.
Cary staff have met and otherwise engaged with community members on several different concerns that have been raised along Cornwall Road. To date, our staff's efforts include:
- Regular communications with the Glenaire contractor to ensure that on-going construction operations are limited in their impact to the surrounding neighborhood.
- Incorporation of a raised crosswalk adjacent to the Glenaire expansion as part of that development's construction.
- Installation of "No Parking" signage near Cornwall Village to reinforce our existing ordinances in an aim to improve visibility for drivers in the higher volume segment approaching Kildaire Farm Road.
- Preliminary review and analysis of open data commonly used by the transportation industry to understand mobility trends. Cary uses this to compare to traditional data collection methods and to contextualize the results.
- Data collection, review and analysis using industry-standard methods to assess speed and volume along West and East Cornwall Roads.
- Pavement markings to calm traffic and enhanced warning devices along West Cornwall Road.
The photo below shows the results of staff's efforts to improve visibility near Cornwall Village.
Data collection was completed in the Summer of 2023, the results of which are presented and discussed in the Traffic Data Summary posted to the Documents section below. In short, the analysis resulted in an initial recommendation by staff for traffic calming along East Cornwall Road. The analysis of West Cornwall Road did not result in a recommendation for additional traffic calming, however, staff are recommending additional pavement markings to improve parking along West Cornwall.
Staff have developed a Concept Design to exhibit Cary's suggestions for traffic calming (speed humps) along East Cornwall Road and to facilitate discussions with affected citizens. This design has been reviewed by Cary's Traffic Calming Safety Committee to ensure that impacts to access and emergency services are minimized and acceptable. A survey was developed to confirm community support for this plan, the results of which are available in the Documents section, along with responses to comments recieved.
Plans for speed humps along East Cornwall Road are being finalized for bidding and construction.
In response to citizen input and review by Cary staff, an Implementation Plan has been developed to help manage parking along West Cornwall Road and improve visibility near intersections and the existing raised crosswalk. This work was completed in September of 2024. Cary staff have also collaborated with representatives from the Glenaire community to pilot a pedestrian warning device to supplement the newly constructed raised crosswalk. Warning flags (https://www.seemeflags.com/) are provided, adjacent to the raised crosswalk, that pedestrians can use to signal their presence more visibly to drivers while they are in the crosswalk.
Any feedback can be provided by emailing the Cary Project Manager directly using the link below. Cary staff are happy to meet directly with community representatives as we move through this process.
