The Advancing Environmental Justice initiative in North Carolina aims to ensure that everyone, no matter their race, income, or location, has access to clean air, water, and soil. This program focuses on helping communities that are most affected by pollution and climate change, such as communities of color, low-income neighborhoods, and indigenous groups.
The initiative will:
Create the Environmental Justice Advisory Council: This council will advise the Governor and state agencies on how to include environmental justice in their policies and programs.Set Goals and Measuring Progress: State agencies will develop and track goals to improve environmental justice in N.C. These goals will be reviewed and updated regularly with input from the public.Develop an Environmental Justice Hub and Mapping Tool: This online resource will provide information about environmental justice issues and help identify areas that need attention.Encourage Public Participation: The initiative ensures that everyone has a chance to voice their concerns and contribute to the decision-making process regarding environmental issues.Assess Cumulative Impacts: The council will work with academic institutions to research and understand the combined effects of various environmental hazards on communities.
This initiative, supported by Governor Cooper's Executive Order 292, is part of North Carolina's ongoing efforts to create a healthier and more equitable environment for all its residents.
