American Legion Road Pedestrian Improvements
American Legion Road Pedestrian Improvements
The Massachusetts Avenue and American Legion Road Transportation Alternatives project (TAP) seeks to improve pedestrian safety along Massachusetts Avenue and American Legion Road from Cedar Avenue to the Junction & Breakwater Trail connection on American Legion Road. The goal of this project is to provide sidewalks or other separated pedestrian facilities along the roadways and to provide a safe crossing of East Savannah Road for cyclists and pedestrians.
Overview
The Massachusetts Avenue and American Legion Road TAP study corridor extends roughly 0.3 miles along Massachusetts Avenue and American Legion Road, from Cedar Avenue to the northwest and the Junction & Breakwater Trailhead connection to the southeast (figure below). It is located north of the canal and crosses Savannah Road, which is a primary route of travel from Lewes downtown and locations to the west of Lewes Beach.
This project builds upon and refines prior efforts to enhance pedestrian and bicycle connections throughout the City of Lewes. The Lewes Bike Plan (see documents section for a PDF) recommended improvements to American Legion Road and Massachusetts Avenue including the following:
- Add a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at the Savannah Road intersection.
- Add pedestrian push buttons at the existing crosswalk.
- Add bike push buttons that are accessible to on road bicyclists.
- Add sharrows on American Legion Road / Massachusetts Avenue to designate a bike route.
