About the Project:

Anacostia is one of first designated historic districts in Washington D.C. Established in 1978, the Anacostia Historic District owes its designation to the dedicated efforts of local community groups and residents committed to preserving the area's historical and cultural heritage. That same community spirit is evident through its ongoing support for Anacostia's arts and cultural initiatives along the Anacosita Historic District commercial corridor.

The Anacostia Historic Commercial Corridor stretches from the base of the 11th Street Bridge to Howard Road, extending down Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue to Marion Barry Avenue (formerly Good Hope Road, SE) and reaching the bottom of Minnesota Avenue.

The Anacostia Historic Distric Commercial Corridor Design Guidelines aim to assist property owners, tenants, residents, and developers in identifying the defining features of Anacostia's historic character and provides a framework for guiding the design of new construction additions and alterations along the Anacostia Historic District commercial corridor.

Learn about commercial/retail preservation principles for residents, property owners, tenants, businesses, and community members to consider when acquiring a building permit in the Anacostia Historic District through the DC Historic Preservation Office.

We encourage you to review the design guidelines and share your feedback on how we can improve them.
