This first question focuses on potential lane changes along Capital Blvd. Consider how Capital Blvd. currently looks and compare it to the three options below.

Capital Blvd between I-440 and Louisburg currently has four lanes in each direction and, in most places, there are sidewalks on both sides.

The existing cross-section for Capital Boulevard between I-440 and Louisburg Road has four lanes in each direction, and in most places there are sidewalks on both sides.

Concept Section 1

  • Sets aside space for a new lane to be constructed along the median; the lane along the curb would be converted to a semi-exclusive bus lane
  • Cars would be allowed to use the bus lane to make turns but could not use it to travel along Capital Boulevard
  • Bus service in the semi-exclusive lane would be more reliable than existing bus service
  • Widens the sidewalk on the west side to 12 feet
  • Wider than the existing section and the same width as Concept Section 2

Concept Section 2

  • Sets aside space for a new lane next to the median; this lane could be constructed to provide a dedicated bus lane
  • Other vehicles would not be allowed to use the bus lane
  • Bus service in the dedicated lane would be more reliable than existing service and the service provided in the semi-exclusive lane in Concept Section 1
  • Widens the sidewalk on the west side to 12 feet
  • Wider street than the existing section; the same width as Concept Section 1

Concept Section 3

  • Sets aside room for a dedicated bus lane along the median
  • Bus service in the dedicated lane would be more reliable than existing service and the service provided in the semi-exclusive lane in Concept Section 1
  • Widens sidewalk on the west side to 12 feet
  • Provides extra medians that separate the inner lanes from the outer lanes
  • Inner lanes are not open to driveways and have fewer traffic signals
  • Outer lanes have driveway openings and vehicles have more traffic signals
  • Can be more comfortable for pedestrians and encourage a more urban type of development
  • Requires the widest roadway of the three concepts
