CROSS CONNECTION CONTROL
CROSS CONNECTION CONTROL
The Frederick County Division of Water and Sewer Utilities (DWSU) will hold a virtual public informational meeting on Wednesday, May 18, at 1:00 pm, regarding proposed Cross-Connection Control regulations. These regulations mostly affect commercial, industrial and non-residential property owners; however, they affect all DWSU water customers.
Please be advised that in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR 26.04.01.32) the supplier of water is required to prepare and submit for approval a plan for cross-connection control to the Maryland Department of the Environment. A cross-connection is a point in a plumbing system where it is possible for a nonpotable substance to come into contact with the potable (safe) drinking water supply. Common examples of cross-connections include a garden hose submerged in a pesticide mixture, a piped connection providing potable feed water to an industrial process, such as a cooling tower, or a submerged outlet of an irrigation system. Connections to firefighting equipment are other very common cross-connections. Most cross-connections occur beyond the customer service connection, within residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial plumbing systems. Cross-connections can be created in existing facilities without the knowledge of the water system managers and operators. The proposed regulations are designed to greatly reduce the risk of contamination to the public drinking water supply.
The draft regulations will be discussed at the meeting for its customers, various stakeholders, and other interested parties. DWSU will provide a brief presentation prior to receiving comments at the public meeting, but no action will be taken at the meeting.
