Proposed Solar Arrays at Laurel Hill Golf Club
Proposed Solar Arrays at Laurel Hill Golf Club
The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) invites you to share your thoughts during the public review of a proposed canopy mounted solar array system in the parking lot of the Laurel Hill Golf Club. Located within the Mt. Vernon planning district, Laurel Hill Golf Club is one of seven (7) golf facilities owned and operated by FCPA and is widely regarded as one of the best public golf facilities in the region. With an 18-hole course that has hosted national and regional championships, striking clubhouse, and top level practice and teaching facilities, the course has marked its place within the game of golf. The facility has also had a history as a leader in energy conservation as the clubhouse was designed to LEED silver, a rarity in 2005, and features a geothermal heating and cooling system. Now, through the County Solar Contract with Sun Tribe Solar, the facility is proposing installing the first solar array in the FCPA network. The proposed installation would consist of two (2) canopy structures installed on the two (2) western most islands in the parking lot. The canopies would be centrally supported and stretch over the parking spaces on either side of the islands, providing shade for cars but leaving the driving lane clear and uncovered. The canopies and arrays would be stationary and provide clearances for public and emergency vehicles. Due to the bowl shape design of the parking lot, the canopies and arrays will be largely hidden from view except from the range and chipping area. The arrays will offset approximately 78% of the facility electrical consumption with a fixed, flat rate $/kW price over the 30-year contract term. This installation will be the first step toward the County goals of producing 25% renewable energy onsite by 2030, and 50% by 2040, and reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.
