Historically, Walton Street Park has been a central gathering place for family reunions, church events, and youth recreation in the Asheville community for almost a century.

Although many cultures and ethnicities use this facility, Walton street Park served as a significant place of refuge for the region's African American communities, who were prohibited from other recreational facilities due to the Jim Crow laws of segregation.
