State Route 82 Bridge Rehabilitation Project
State Route 82 Bridge Rehabilitation Project
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and consultant GFT are investigating rehabilitation and replacement alternatives to improve the short-term structural condition and seek a long-term transportation solution for the bridge that carries State Route 82 over the Cuyahoga River in the City of Brecksville and Sagamore Hills Township. Recent inspections have identified advanced deterioration in key structural components. Ongoing maintenance efforts have addressed urgent deficiencies, but a long-term solution is needed.

Project Background
History and Existing Conditions
- The 1882 Station Road Bridge, a single-span steel truss structure, was replaced by the subject bridge (also known as the Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge) Built in 1931. This historic bridge serves as a critical transportation link between Cuyahoga and Summit Counties, having withstood decades of service and environmental exposure.
- Over its service life, the SUM-82-00.000 Bridge has undergone several maintenance and rehabilitation activities. The first significant concrete patching set of plans is from 1978. By the late 1980’s it was apparent that a more significant bridge rehabilitation would be needed, and the plans for this significant rehabilitation were prepared in 1989 with the major rehabilitation work completed in 1990-1991.
- Additional minor rehabilitation work has been performed on the bridge since 1991. In 2021 pedestrian fencing was installed on the parapets, while during the same time period the U.S. National Park Service undertook a separate project on the river to remove the low head Brecksville Diversion Dam just upstream of the bridge.
- In 2025, ODOT let another rehabilitation project focused on addressing the urgent structural deterioration of the bridge pier columns, spandrel columns, and arch ribs. The rehabilitation project uncovered a vertical crack in the column that necessitated a bridge closure.
- Recent inspections have identified advanced deterioration in key structural components. Ongoing maintenance efforts have addressed urgent deficiencies, but a long-term solution is needed.
- An "Existing Conditions & Rehabilitation Report" was recently developed to study the bridge condition and identify possible alternatives to improve the structure.
