Letter from the City Manager

As we reflect on the past year, I am proud to introduce the 2024 Annual Report for Austin Transportation and Public Works. This report is more than a summary of accomplishments—it is a testament to the dedication, resilience and collective vision of the public servants who work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for every Austin resident. At the heart of our city’s mission are five guiding principles: Empathy, Ethics, Excellence, Engagement, and Equity—values that drive every decision, every project and every service we provide. These principles ensure that as Austin continues to grow, we remain focused on building a city that is safer, more sustainable and more accessible for all.

  • Empathy is reflected in the way we design and implement infrastructure that serves all Austinites—whether it’s creating safer routes to school for our children, expanding access to public transportation, or ensuring that every street is built with pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in mind.
  • Ethics guide us in our stewardship of public resources, ensuring that we manage funding responsibly, operate transparently and hold ourselves accountable to the community we serve.
  • Excellence is demonstrated through the transformative projects completed this year—from the Barton Springs Road safety pilot to securing $200 million in federal funding for critical transportation initiatives.
  • Engagement is the foundation of our progress, as we actively collaborate with residents, businesses and community partners to shape the future of Austin’s transportation network.
  • Equity remains a driving force in every initiative, ensuring that improvements reach every neighborhood, particularly those historically underserved, so all Austinites can benefit from safe, reliable and sustainable mobility options.
This past year has been one of meaningful progress, but we recognize our work is never done. With a commitment to innovation and a shared vision for a thriving, connected Austin, we will continue to build on our successes in the year ahead. Thank you to the dedicated professionals of Transportation and Public Works for their unwavering service and to the residents of Austin for your trust and partnership. Together, we are shaping a city that moves forward— safely, efficiently, and equitably.

Welcome to our Transportation and Public Works (TPW) 2024 annual report. TPW just completed its first complete year of operations, and I am honored to share our new department’s performance and accomplishments. As we continue to settle into our roles at TPW, I want to thank our community for entrusting us with the highest quality of transportation and public works services. Our team of dedicated public service professionals are here every day to maintain streets and bridges, build sidewalks and bike lanes, operate traffic signals, stripe our streets, and provide engineering and planning services that maintain the highest quality of life for our community. They work in all weather conditions--including heat, floods, and snow and ice-- to ensure our emergency safety responders can reach those in need.

Our capital delivery teams are providing crucial investments in our mobility infrastructure. These include the Barton Springs Road safety project, the Austin-to-Manor Urban Trail, and starting construction on the Longhorn Dam pedestrian bridge. Our team also leveraged more than $230 million in federal grant awards to continue this transformative work.

I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all the supporters of Transportation and Public Works, and the many fine women and men in our department who make this possible.
