Be a Good Neighbor: Recycle Cardboard!
As an environmental leader among local governments in the State of Florida, a goal of the City is to facilitate the recycling of materials such as cardboard. The City also has an interest in preserving the aesthetic standards of the City by not allowing cardboard to be deposited in trash pile areas.
With that in mind, the City Commission approved on February 26, 2019 a new Ordinance including the definition of “cardboard” as a recyclable material. This means that placing cardboard in a trash pile as household refuse is now a violation of the City Code.
An educational period is currently in effect to inform residents of this new ordinance. Code Violations warnings will be issued beginning on August 26, 2019.
Read the signed Cardboard Ordinance below under "Documents."
How To Recycle Cardboard Boxes
Residents are urged to recycle their cardboard rather than place in trash piles in the right-of-way. All cardboard, set out for recycling, must be placed inside your red bin with the rest of recyclables, or placed neatly next to it. The cardboard MUST be cut up or folded into manageable pieces for sanitation workers to remove. You may request additional red recycle bins for free by calling 305-460-5346.
Think green and recycle right. By doing this, you'll not only help the environment; you'll also help us keep our City beautiful and clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recycle pizza boxes?
Pizza boxes are NOT recyclable. Pizza boxes and other food containers are often contaminated with grease, rendering them useless for recycling. But, please don’t throw your used pizza boxes in the trash pits either. The proper way to dispose of pizza boxes are inside your garbage container.
What if the cardboard boxes don't fit inside the recycling bin?
If your flattened cardboard boxes don't fit inside your recycling bin, place them next to it. There’s no size limit for cardboard boxes. Things like tape, labels, and other items can all be left on the cardboard (they'll be removed at the recycling center).
Can I throw cardboard boxes on the trash pits?
Cardboard boxes cannot be placed on the trash pits. They must go in the recycling bin and must be flattened.
What happens if it rains and the cardboard left on the recycling bin gets wet?
If it rains and the cardboard left of your recycle bin gets wet, it will be collected for recycling. Some light rain might just moisten the top layer. However, we ask that you try to keep cardboard as clean and dry as possible. Please be mindful of the weather and be strategic on rainy pickup days and maybe hold on to your recyclables until the next collection day.
How do I report if my recycling wasn't collected today?
If for some reason your recycle bin is not collected, please contact our Sanitation Division at 305-460-5346 or report it online at https://www.coralgables.com/service-requests.
