Bicycle & Pedestrian Menu
Despite the close proximity of neighborhoods, businesses, and essential services within the US 17 corridor, this area is difficult for bicyclists and pedestrians to travel. One issue includes the lack of connection from West Ashley to the Charleston Peninsula. The City of Charleston hopes to provide this connection by constructing the Ashley River Crossing, a bike and pedestrian bridge over the Ashley River. The City received federal funding for the bridge in 2019 from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Funding (BUILD) Grant. Click here to learn more about this project. To ensure cyclists and pedestrians have safe access to the new bridge, the US 17 Corridor Study looked at ways to improve walking and bicycling on either side of the Ashley River.
Traffic calming measures use the street's design to slow traffic. For example, speed humps, narrow lanes, and curves encourage drivers to go slower. Traffic calming measures are useful tools that provide safer conditions for cyclists and pedestrians at intersections, along streets, and in neighborhoods. The potential projects below use traffic calming measures to improve bicycling and walking along the US 17 corridor.
