A large part of New York State will be in the path of totality of the next Total Solar Eclipse to cross the United States on April 8, 2024. Visit Rochester estimates we will see 350 – 500 thousand visitors to the Finger Lakes region for this major event!
According to astronomers, viewing a total solar eclipse like this, where you live, is a rare and spectacular event. It will attract enthusiasts locally and from around the world, creating opportunities to show off our region to a wide range of residents and visitors.
It is not too early for the public sector, particularly transportation providers, highway departments, public safety agencies, parks and recreation departments, and others to start thinking about the influx, and the mass exodus, of hundreds of thousands of people traveling to our region mostly by car, but also by plane, train, bus, or boat.
As part of the Rochester Eclipse Task Force, the Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) is heading up the Transportation / Government Sector to ensure transportation and other public safety agencies are well-informed, prepared, and ready to execute thorough plans to safely operate and maintain the transportation system in the days leading up to, during, and following the eclipse.
The Transportation /Government Sector of the Rochester Eclipse Task Force continues to share information about eclipse planning to people interested in transportation, emergency response and overall public safety.
Each presentation includes a short science lesson, the reasons why the eclipse will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to our region, a glimpse of what the tourism and science education sectors are envisioning, potential impacts to travel and public safety, mitigation measures, a list of resources and a chance to connect with others facing similar challenges and opportunities, all of which will help guide local emergency preparedness planning.
The purpose of the meeting is for all attendees to:
- get familiar with the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse cosmic event ☼
- learn about what planning is taking place in the science education and tourism sectors ☼
- understand the potential impacts to travel and public safety ☼
- anticipate specific mitigation measures ☼
- become aware of available resources ☼
- network and connect with others facing same challenges and opportunities ☼
GTC, as part of the Rochester Eclipse Task Force, hosted a transportation planning workshop at the Conable Technology Building on the campus of Genesee Community College.
Rochester Solar Eclipse Task Force
A community task force, led by Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC), Visit Rochester and the Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) is coordinating stakeholders and collectively planning to make the most of this opportunity. Stakeholders in the 2024 eclipse come from all sectors of our community. This includes our cultural and recreational venues, to food and beverage retailers, to transportation and law enforcement officers, to educators and other organizations invested in science, technology, and optics, and more.
