DRAFT Report for Review: Proposed Foodware System Design Elements

Please give us your thoughts and feedback at the bottom of the page on the draft Reusable Foodware System Design & Approach for Chatham County!

HOW WE GOT HERE

The Savannah Reusable Foodware System began as a collaboration between Savannah Riverkeeper, Perpetual, the city of Savannah, Tybee Island, and Chatham County. To date, this project has grown to include many project partners and collaborators. According to Census data, Chatham County is home to 300,000+ residents and over 4,000 commercial businesses and is frequented annually by upwards of 17 million tourists. This makes the Chatham area a natural choice for a reusable foodware system.

Reuse Public Meeting

Following initial baseline workshops yielding a consensus that a reuse system was desired and necessary for Savannah, the team began drafting these specific recommendations. We have since sought (and are actively seeking) community feedback on the system design for continued collaboration toward the development of a reusable foodware system that is functional for the community with the support of community partners.

The vision for this reusable initiative is this - in the place of disposable plastic/paper foodware and plastic water bottles, businesses will have a chance to offer reusable foodware and/or reusable aluminum water bottles. The foodware and bottles can be returned to the place of business or to shared collection bins around town. The foodware and bottles are commercially washed and sanitized, then returned to the businesses.
