Share Your Thoughts on the Region's Next Round of Transportation Projects!

The Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization is recommending 14 transportation projects across our region to receive federal funding. Before our Board makes a final decision, we want to hear from you. Use the map below to see what is being recommended, then share your thoughts in the comment section at the bottom of the page. The public comment period runs through the end of May 2026.

What is This About?

Every few years, federal transportation dollars flow into our region to help pay for improvements like new bus purchases, sidewalks, greenways, intersection upgrades, and electric vehicle charging stations. Those dollars do not go out automatically. Local governments and agencies must apply for them, and an organization called the Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization (or TPO for short) is responsible for deciding which projects get recommended for funding.

The TPO recently finished reviewing the latest round of applications. Seven local agencies submitted 18 projects and 1 program, all competing for a limited pool of federal money. After a scoring process, TPO staff have put together a recommendation for which projects should be funded. That recommendation is what you are being asked to weigh in on today.

Your feedback will be shared with the TPO's Technical Committee and Board before they vote on the final project list on June 23, 2026.

How Projects Were Chosen

The process is called a Call for Projects. Here is how it worked this cycle:

The TPO opened applications at the beginning of January 2026 for member to submit the projects they wanted considered for funding. Seven agencies applied, submitting 18 projects and 1 program in total.

The TPO then scored the applications using a policy the Board adopted to guide how federal funding decisions get made. New projects were evaluated on eight criteria, including things like how well the project connects people to transit, how many people live and work nearby, what phase of development the project is in, and how the project addresses safety and equity. Existing projects (projects that have already received funding in past years and need more to keep moving forward) were scored separately using three criteria, because the TPO wants to prioritize finishing projects that are already underway.

After scoring, TPO staff looked at the available funding, the scores, and other factors like making sure no single agency receives too much of the available money in one cycle. Based on all of that, staff developed the funding recommendation shown on the map below. Additional details can also be found in the document section to the right.

What Happens Next

The public comment period is open through May 31, 2026. We want to hear from you on any of the recommended projects, the overall mix, or the process itself. A few questions to get you started:

  • Do these projects reflect the transportation investments you want to see in our region?
  • Are there specific projects you want to support or raise concerns about?
  • Is there anything about the process you would like the Technical Committee and Board to consider before they vote?

After the comment period closes, TPO staff will share all comments with the Technical Committee, which will make a recommendation to the Board. The Board votes on the final funding list on June 23, 2026.
