Project Background

In 2023, Arlington County completed the Arlington Boulevard Trail Feasibility Study to evaluate opportunities for improving pedestrian and bicycle access along Arlington Boulevard. The study developed cross-sections and incorporated community feedback to identify preferred trail configurations.

This capital project builds on the study’s findings by advancing the preferred alternative cross‑sections in Segments 5, 6, and 7 (see Project Area map) to develop a connected, continuous multi-use trail for this 0.5 mile segment on the south side of Arlington Boulevard.

Project Goals

  • Construct a 11‑foot‑wide multiuse trail to support walking, biking, and rolling for users of all ages and abilities.

  • Provide adequate buffer widths or vertical separation between the trail and Arlington Boulevard to improve comfort and safety.

  • Upgrade intersections with curb ramps, marked crosswalks, and pedestrian refuge islands that meet the latest accessibility guidance.

More information about the project's origin, planning basis and history can be found on the project webpage.

Project Location

Anotated map of the project corridor for the Arlington Boulevard Trail Southside, outlining the three segments from the Arlington Boulevard Trail Study that make up the area between S. George Mason Road and the Jackson Street pedestrian bridge where the project is being developed.

This project develops the concepts for trail segments 5, 6 and 7 in the Arlington Boulevard Trail Study (2023).

  • Segment 5 connects the intersection of S. George Mason Drive at Arlington Boulevard east past the driveway into the federal facility.
  • Segment 6 connects the driveway from the federal facility to the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and S. Glebe Road
  • Segment 7 connects S. Glebe road to the Jackson Street pedestrian bridge over Arlington Boulevard

The existing Arlington Boulevard Trail in the project corridor is primarily on the sidewalk or service roads and does not meet the recommended widths for multi-use trails at any point in these three segments.
