The City of Raleigh is planning the Big Branch Greenway Connector Trail, a 3.5-mile extension from the Crabtree Creek Trail (near Six Forks Rd and Selby Dr) to Sandy Forks Rd.

In September 2024, the City gathered public input on alignment options for four different segments of the Big Branch Greenway Connector Trail, through an online survey, open house, and pop-up event. While alignment preferences were clear for three segments of the trail, Segment 1B (between Six Forks Rd and Wake Towne Dr) remained undecided. Of 313 survey participants, 49% favored a roadside option along Plantation Rd & Belvin Dr, while 51% preferred one of three streamside alignment options running along the west side of Big Branch. An additional on-road option via Plantation Rd & Hines Dr was also suggested.

This round of public outreach aims to finalize the preferred alignment for Segment 1B and includes the consideration of one streamside alignment option and two roadside alignment options. Please refer to the map below to see how Segment 1B fits into the overall project.

The map below provides a closer look at the three alignment options being considered for Segment 1B of the Big Branch Greenway Connector Trail. The Streamside Option, shown in purple, runs along the west side of Big Branch (a stream), behind homes in the Anderson Forest neighborhood. This is an existing City of Raleigh sewer easement that provides a mostly cleared path but does run across the property of 9 homes. The Plantation Rd/Belvin Dr Option, shown in blue, runs along the west side of Plantation Rd and on the south side of Belvin Dr, mostly in front of and to the side of homes located in the Crabtree Heights Neighborhood. This option runs across the property of an office condominium development, with approximately 44 units, and the property of 6 homes. The third option, shown in orange, runs along the east and south sides of Plantation Rd and on the east side of Hines Dr, mostly in front of and to the side of homes located in the Crabtree Heights Neighborhood. This option runs across the property of a daycare center and 9 homes. Right of way will have to be acquired for all three options.

Maps, visualizations and other considerations for the three alignment options are shown below. Considerations like distance to homes, number of roadway and driveway crossings, slope or steepness, the potential need to disrupt or relocate utilities and the number of large trees needed to be removed to accommodate each alignment is also included. Please review each alignment option, paying close attention to details that impact user experience and safety, to select your preferred alignment option.
