Wake BRT Southern - Transit Corridor Artist Concept Design Survey

Wake BRT Southern - Transit Corridor Artist Concept Design Survey

Transit corridor artist, Mary Carter Taub, is seeking feedback on concept designs for future Wake BRT Southern Corridor public art. She is looking at three different locations along the proposed route for possible art. Note: All images show concepts, not final art – color, style, shape, and location are all subject to change.

Each of the proposed artworks respond to how people will move through the site (riding the bus, driving, walking, and cycling to name a few). The artworks are intended to transform easily overlooked transitional spaces—getting from Point A to Point B—into intentional, vibrant public spaces.

Please review the designs and answer the questions below. You can share any additional feedback you have at the bottom of this page. This survey should take about five minutes and will close November 6, 2026.

Initial Survey

Site 1: NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Location: South Wilmington St. over South Saunders St.

This concept would transform a new proposed pedestrian bridge into a visually striking structure that is perceived differently, depending on viewer proximity and speed.

Suspended high above the road, pedestrians would experience the bridge up close as a “tunnel,” moving through its colorful interior canopy. From a distance, the bridge sits on the “horizon” and would be experienced primarily as a single bold exterior bridge color by cars passing by.

Which color direction feels most exciting for this pedestrian bridge?

Site 2: I-40 UNDERPASS

Location: South Wilmington under I-40

This concept would be experienced at eye-level, featuring paint and vertical lighting directed toward the sidewalk (not the road). The painted columns and lighting would activate and illuminate what is currently a dark and intimidating highway underpass, making it feel lighter and more dynamic. Paint would provide a visual presence during the day while ambient lighting would highlight the structure and create safety lighting at night.

Which color/lighting combo feels most welcoming for walking or driving under the bridge?

Site 3: ENTRANCE TO THE WETLANDS NATURE PRESERVE

Location: Walnut Creek Trailhead, South Wilmington & Fayetteville Street

This concept would mark the entrance to the Greenway near a future BRT station and would be grounded directly to/from the earth. A series of sculptures, either solid forms or hollow arches, would be derived from outlines of the actual rocks on site. These structures would be painted in vibrant colors in contrast to the surrounding natural environment, creating a playful setting where physical interaction would be encouraged.

Which spatial arrangement is the most visually interesting for greenway entrance?
