Construction Update
Update March 2026
The second phase of the Burrell Drive Project is now complete and includes the following components:
- A new shared-use pathway behind the south curb of Wooten Drive between Burrell Drive and Wooten Elementary School to support safer routes to school
- Curb bulb-outs at Anderson Lane, Wooten Drive, and Ohlen Road for the in-street trail connection
- A new concrete pedestrian crossing island on Dale Drive between Burrell Drive and Lazy Lane to support safer routes to school
- Asphalt speed cushions on Burrell Drive between Wooten Drive and Weyford Drive
The final phase will begin in the coming months after planned street maintenance (resurfacing) is completed on Burrell Drive between Anderson Lane and Wooten Drive, and between Weyford Drive and Ohlen Road. The resurfacing will help preserve the street and extend its lifespan, and is scheduled for May. Following this work, crews will install the in-street trail on the east side of Burrell Drive. This phase will include:
- Pavement markings to define the in-street trail and buffer along the east side of the street
- Flexible delineators and low-profile rubber bumps will be placed within the buffer space to safely separate trail users and vehicles, with gaps at intersections and driveways
- Relocating flexible delineators at existing asphalt speed cushions to create more space for people using the in-street trail
- Shifting on-street parking from the east side of the street to the west side to accommodate the in-street trail
Street resurfacing is scheduled for May 9, barring any weather or any other unforeseen delays. The installation of the new street design will take place in late May, with full installation anticipated by June 1.
Project Scope Map
Update November 2025
The first phase of the Burrell Drive Project is now complete, including the following components:
- The centerline has been reinstalled along Burrell Drive between Wooten Drive and Weyford Drive
- Dale Drive has been converted from a one-way into a two-way street
The second phase will begin in November, with crews focusing on concrete and asphalt work as follows.
- A new shared-use path behind the south curb of Wooten Drive between Burrell Drive and Wooten Elementary School to support safer routes to school
- Curb bulb-outs at Anderson Lane, Wooten Drive, and Ohlen Road for the in-street trail connection
- Pavement markings will be placed to define the travel lane preceding the construction of the curb bulb-outs at Anderson Lane, Wooten Drive, and Ohlen Road
- A new concrete pedestrian crossing island will be installed on Dale Drive between Burrell Drive and Lazy Lane
- Asphalt speed cushions will be installed on Burrell Drive between Wooten Drive and Weyford Drive
Changes based on feedback
Speed cushions will be installed in the first phase of the project.
- Dale Drive will be converted to two-way traffic to better support neighborhood circulation.
- A new pedestrian crossing will be installed on Dale Drive to help keep speeds low and support improved access to the park, playground and recreational sports fields.
- A shared-use path will connect from the in-street trail on Burrell Drive to Wooten Elementary's new campus along the south curb of Wooten Drive.
The in-street trail (two-way bikeway) along Burrell Drive is moving forward as proposed. For a detailed drawing of the planned changes, please click on the picture below:
This project is a critical segment along the Red Line Parkway alignment. The map below describes the various segments of this trail system and where the Burrell project fits.
About Burrell Drive
Burrell Drive is a two-lane residential street through the heart of the Wooten neighborhood, connecting residents to local schools, parks, churches and nearby restaurant, retail and grocery destinations along Anderson Lane to the south and across US 183 to the north via Ohlen Road. Burrell Drive is also parallel to the Red Line Parkway, a 32-mile urban trail that is planned and built in segments that generally follow the CapMetro Red Line railway.
Project Goals
MAINTAIN SAFE SPEED │ RED LINE PARKWAY CONNECTION │IMPROVE COMFORT AND ACCESS
Keep Speed Low – Burrell Drive's posted speed limit is 30 mph except in the school zone between Anderson Lane and just north of Wooten Drive. The goal of this project is to return average speeds to 25 mph or lower and offer that consistently across the entire extent of Burrell Drive.
Connect the Red Line Parkway - Efforts are underway to fund and construct segments of the Red Line Parkway north and south of Burrell Drive, as shown on the map above. There are currently no plans to construct a trail along the rail right-of-way between Anderson Lane and Ohlen Road. As a street running parallel to the planned trail alignment along this CapMetro Red Line railway, Burrell Drive offers a unique opportunity to provide a trail connection sooner.
Increase comfort and access - Burrell Drive currently has a sidewalk on one side and no bicycle facilities. People on bikes and people driving currently share the general travel lane. Sharing space on streets with higher speeds has been found to be generally uncomfortable for most Austinites, especially those interested in bicycling but concerned about their safety or that of their young children.
Safer routes to schools and parks: Wooten Elementary School and Wooten Park are both located just east of Burrell Drive, and Redeemer Lutheran School is at the corner of Burrell Drive and Anderson Lane. This project seeks to support safer routes to these schools and the neighborhood park, while also maintaining vehicular access and space for queuing during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. A shared-use path will be constructed along the south curb of Wooten Drive between Burrell Drive and Lazy Lane as part of the Safe Routes to School Program and Austin ISD's renovations to Wooten Elementary School's campus.
Proposed Changes

Project Components:
In-Street Trail - A proposed in-street trail along the east curb of Burrell Drive, protected with rubber curbs. Mail and trash service would continue along the east curb as it does now.

An example of an in-street trail protected with rubber curbs
- Slower Speeds and Improved Safety - The addition of the in-street trail is expected to help keep speeds at or below the desired 25 mph. Similar projects have shown a 90% reduction in high-risk speeding (speeds 5 mph over the posted limit). Overall, crashes are shown to decrease by an average of 30% in similar projects in Austin.
- On-Street Parking - To make space for these changes, on-street parking would be moved to the west curb. Parking analysis shows that overall parking utilization does not exceed 50% of available space on any given segment of Burrell Drive, and it is generally higher along the west curb than on the east curb.
Parking analysis performed at various times of day and days of the week on Burrell Drive.

Implementation
The project will be installed in phases, starting this Fall, as follows:
- Reinstallation of the speed cushions on Burrell Drive between Wooten Drive and Weyford Drive
- Converting Dale Drive from a one-way to a two-way street
- New Shared Use Path on Wooten Drive from Burrell Drive to the Wooten Elementary School
- Construction of a new concrete pedestrian crossing island on Dale Drive near Wooten Park
From this initial phase of work, corner modification will follow at Ohlen Road, Wooten Drive and Anderson Lane. This work is necessary to make space for the in-street trail. Once the corners are reconstructed, the in-street trail will be installed in the Spring of 2026.
