Carver Vision Phase 1a and 1b Community Survey
Carver Vision Phase 1a and 1b Community Survey
Thank you for taking part in the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center’s Phase 1 community survey. Your feedback plays a vital role in creating welcoming and inclusive spaces that honor our community’s rich cultural heritage and shared vision. For more information about this project and future engagement opportunities, please visit the project webpage..
Phase 1 improvements, identified in the Facility Expansion Plan approved by Council in 2021, focus on enhancing several key areas. Your input will help guide five developments to meet community needs.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department values representation from the diverse communities we serve. While your participation is optional, your insights are greatly appreciated. Together, we can shape a museum that serves both current and future generations.
New Multi-Purpose Area
The new multi-purpose area will be located indoors in the current administrative office area for Carver staff. The area of the existing administrative suite is approximately 1,253 SF. These questions aim to help prioritize how the space will be utilized in the future. Please keep in mind that some options may have limitations due to the size and practical constraints of the area. For example, if "coworking" is selected as a potential use, the space might not support all amenities found in commercial coworking spaces.
How important is it for the new multi-purpose area to be a flexible, easy-to-use space that supports a variety of events and programs?
What types of events or activities would you like to see in the new multi-purpose area? (Select all that apply)
How would you like to see the new space organized and used by community? (Please rank the following options)
Considering other public spaces available at the Carver, are there any group sizes or meeting types for which there isn't good existing space? How can this space supplement what is existing?
Which features are most important to include in the multi-purpose area? (Select all that apply)
How could the multi-purpose area best support Carver's mission to celebrate culture, community, and Black history?
This image was part of the 2021 Facility Expansion Plan. It shows a potential, aerial image containing all three phases of improvements. This survey covers questions to gather your input on the reflected outdoor spaces including the new Community Gardens, Outdoor Classrooms, Event Lawn with a Covered Pavilion and the relocation of the Juneteenth statues.
New Community Garden
The new community gardens will provide opportunities for residents to connect with nature, cultivate fresh produce, and foster community connections. These will not be located in the sunken gardens/current pool area. The pool area is expected to be filled in during the phase 1 improvements to make space for the event lawn and outdoor classrooms.
How likely are you to visit the new community garden for relaxation, learning, or connecting with nature?
What themes or activities would you like the community garden to focus on? (Select all that apply)
Which features are most important to include in the garden? (Select all that apply)
How can the garden celebrate Carver's history while creating a space for community learning and connection?
Outdoor Classrooms
These future spaces have a lot of potential for programming by Carver staff and outside service providers.
How important is it to create outdoor classrooms for learning, workshops, and community gatherings?
What types of programs or activities should be offered in the outdoor classrooms? (Select all that apply)
What features would make the outdoor classrooms more usable and welcoming? (Select all that apply)
How can outdoor classrooms best reflect George Washington Carver's legacy of learning, sustainability, and innovation?

How likely are you to attend events on the flexible event lawn?
What types of events or activities would you like to see in this space? (Select all that apply)
What amenities would help make the event lawn comfortable and welcoming? (Select all that apply)
How can the event lawn balance cultural celebrations, community gatherings, and honoring Black history?
How important is it to relocate the Juneteenth statues to a visible and secure location?
Which location would you prefer for the Juneteenth statues? (Please consider the Juneteenth Plaza will not be built until Phase 3 construction. If the corner of Angelina and Rosewood is selected, the statues will be near the library parking lot until Phase 3 is constructed.)
How can the statues' new location help honor Black history and enhance the visitor experience?
Do you have ideas for sharing the statues' story while construction is underway (such as a temporary exhibit or community tour)?
