South 78th Street Safety Enhancement Project
South 78th Street has been identified as a Top 20 High Injury Network roadway by the Hillsborough County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). The South 78th Street Safety Enhancement project strives to increase overall safety and accessibility in the Palm River community area. The corridor is an important route for pedestrians and cyclists of all ages who regularly walk or bike to their destinations.
Project Goals
- The project will implement much-needed improvements to support a safe, efficient, and accessible corridor for walking, biking, driving, and transit.
- Implement key elements of the Greater Palm River Area Community Plan, such as the community node located at Palm River Road and South 78th Street (as a 20 Minute Neighborhood), and safety enhancements to South 78th Street from Palm River Road to Causeway Boulevard, setting the stage for mixed uses along the corridor.
- Address safety concerns that have been highlighted by community members, including high severe crash injury rates, high speeds, lack of safe crossings, and continued traffic growth. Safety needs have also been identified in the TPO Vision Zero study and in the Safer Roadways: A Complete Streets Guide document.
