CMRI Sign Regulations
We want your input!
Arlington County is considering updating sign regulations.
Provide feedback by Sunday, November 30 to help us ensure signs in outdoor public spaces (e.g. sidewalks, medians, rights-of-way, parks, schools, etc.) reflect community needs and values.

Existing Regulations for Sidewalk Signs
- Must be self-standing and placed directly in front of a business during open hours.
- Size limit: up to 7 sq. ft. per side, and no taller than 3.5 feet.
- Typically, one sign per public entrance.
- Must leave at least 6 feet of clear walkway for pedestrians.
- No lighting or automatically changing messages allowed.
The next four questions are about sidewalk signs.
The following questions are about other signs that may be placed on the sidewalk, in medians, rights-of-way, and outdoor public spaces (e.g. parks, school fields, etc.).
The next three questions are specifically about pedestrian-oriented signs on sidewalks in Arlington’s mixed-use neighborhoods that may be interactive, and/or could provide directions, transportation information, and key details on businesses and other local attractions.
