Hiawassee St. Stormwater System Repair
Hiawassee St. Stormwater System Repair
Stormwater crews have been working diligently since May 9 after heavy rainfall impacted the area. Crews have identified a significant number of utility conflicts in the area, preventing crews from installing the new stormwater lines. Staff are analyzing the possibility of rerouting and upgrading the line down Hiawassee St. from Rankin to North Lexington.
Happening Now
March 3, 2025 - The City of Asheville completed temporary repaving on Hiawassee Street between Rankin Avenue and North Lexington Avenue, restoring smoother access for motorists and pedestrians. This work was necessary in the interim while planning continues for a permanent upgrade to the utility and stormwater systems.
City staff are actively coordinating with utility partners to finalize designs and ensure infrastructure improvements align with the upgraded stormwater system previously identified. A future road closure will be necessary for permanent stormwater construction, anticipated in Winter 2026.
Past Updates
February 25, 2025 - Crews are currently prepping Hiawassee Street between Rankin Avenue and North Lexington Avenue for repaving, which is expected to take place within the next week, weather permitting. This temporary repaving will restore access while planning continues for permanent utility and stormwater upgrades.
We appreciate your patience as this work progresses and will provide further updates on the construction timeline.
January 3, 2025 - Due to the extensive utility re-construction required and ongoing Helene Response efforts, Hiawassee Street between Rankin Avenue and North Lexington Avenue will be temporarily repaved. This is a temporary solution, necessary to restore access while planning for a permanent upgrade to the utility and stormwater system. The timing of the repaving will be dependent on weather, availability of materials, and on the prioritized road resurfacing needed from our Helene Response.
Staff are actively collaborating with utility partners to identify conflicts and to finalize the utility relocation designs, and ensure the infrastructure improvements align with the upgraded stormwater system previously identified. Road closure for permanent stormwater construction is anticipated to begin after utility work is completed.
We appreciate your patience and support as we work toward long-term improvements for the area. Stay tuned for updates on the construction timeline.
July 9, 2024 - As of July 9, stormwater staff and crews are working to determine the new layout necessary for the stormwater drain. The preliminary work of location and mapping of utility lines started this week. Pending any unforeseen utility or relocation conflicts or weather complications, crews can begin laying stormwater pipe early next week.
June 6, 2024 - Hiawassee St. between Rankin Ave. and N. Lexington will now be closed until August 7. Crews have identified a potential location for the upgraded stormwater system down Hiawassee St. to North Lexington. The City is now working with other utilities to ensure this location is feasible and then will begin construction.
